Many thanks to everyone who joined us for Merlyna Lim's Harvard S&T in Asia talk yesterday. I was heartened by her argument that pauses, care, and offline organizing can create real breaks in contemporary politics' relentless scroll-time. 📱

It was great to host Yu Wang in Harvard's S&T in Asia series yesterday. Something I will remember is how engineers and operators exploited crosstalk to carry radio signals on existing lines, turning an electromagnetic nuisance into a distribution technique. 📻 Fascinating stuff!

Weekly Wanderings: February 8, 2026 I have a new review at The Wall Street Journal, discussing a wonderful and very engaging book by journalist Yi-Ling Liu, The Wall Dancers: Searching for Freedom and Connection on the Chinese Internet. I’ve written a lot over the years about the Chinese Party-state’s imposition of internet controls, so it was a refreshing change to talk about a book that explores the internet as a place of liberation rather than restriction:

Last week, we kicked off the spring 2026 season of the Harvard S&T in Asia online seminar series with a terrific talk by Denis Simon. He traced China's expanding global S&T footprint and what it means for US-China competition and cooperation, making a case for "smart openness" over blunt decoupling.
