Conflict-related sexual violence is a serious violation of international humanitarian law, or the laws of war, and a war crime.
NEW: The state of a mass grave in Damascus and statements by people living in the surrounding area suggest that the area is a mass crime scene and may have been the site of other summary executions.
NEW: Maliโs armed forces, supported by the Russia-backed Wagner Group, and Islamist armed groups have committed serious abuses against civilians since the UN peacekeeping mission withdrew a year ago.
Malian authoritiesโ failure to hold perpetrators to account has eased the way for further abuses.
I wrote this before the new law was enacted but the overall argument still remains valid. Implementing the communal responsibility of promoting virtue and prevention of vice through the modern state is deeply problematic.

Taliban have banned Afghan women from attending medical institutesโthe only type of modern ed allowed for females post 6th grade.

Since the Taliban took power in August 2021, they have largely destroyed Afghanistanโs media landscape, creating such a climate of fear that Afghan journalists cannot genuinely investigate or report.

I visited a #SouthKordofan camp for displaced ppl last month for @hrw.org and witnessed how #malnutrition #Starvation is killing people in #Sudan, many of them children, as warring parties block assistance and #FoodAid falls short. This is what I saw:
