πΏ Postdoc opportunity in plant evolutionary ecology/genetics!
My lab in the Dept. of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Michigan is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to start Fall 2026.
We study plant adaptation, using weeds as model systems.

Our story on the evolution of colistin resistance is just out on @plosbiology.org (journals.plos.org/plosbiology/... Evolution doesnβt happen in isolation. We show that competing fungi can rewire the evolutionary trajectory of colistin resistance in P. aeruginosa. Great teamwork with the Ernst lab
In new research, Yu-Ying Phoebe Hsieh, Ian OβKeefe, Ajai Dandekar, Harmit Malik &co reveal how magnesium sequestration by C. albicans enables P. aeruginosa to evolve much higher levels of resistance to colistin (a last-resort #antibiotic).

Fun news! @gcbias.bsky.social and I are teaching a 2-week online population genetics workshop this summer to raise money for the Center for Population Biology at UC Davis. We're trying to gauge interest -- please fill this out if you might be interested! And please share broadly!

New work from the Barber lab crew ft yours truly π
Congratulations to new prof @caitlinkowa.bsky.social for driving this impressive project and roping me in to contribute

What we found is bleak. Attorneys told us theyβre struggling to get information in to or out of ICE and Customs and Border Protection facilities, which are holding nearly 69,000 people this month. And detainees often are forced to choose between remaining in crowded, squalid conditions or leaving the country immediately. Judges in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles have ordered the government to facilitate attorney-client communications at Homeland Security buildings. But attorneys say that doesnβt always happen. Even if detainees get the option, some worry theyβll be punished if they take it.
Lawyers can't reach clients in ICE detention. I've heard it anecdotally, but scale of issue is horrifying.

So who in the lab gets the first author on the one great paper huh
New lab preprint! Andrew Frando, Bobby Parsek, and Graham Roberts describe how components of the quinolone quorum sensing circuit of P. aeruginosa interact in competition with another Gram-negative bacterium, S. maltophilia -- it's a three-component AND logic gate.

This is better than nothing. Good fucking riddance to the micro nazi. Let's hope Noem and Miller are next. Keep calling your politicians. They are clearly feeling the pressure.

people of the twin cities, do with this info what you will.
Damn proud of Minnesota.
π¨HOLY CRAP. An ICE whistleblower just revealed a secret memo authorizing ICE officers to break into homes without a judicial warrant, which DHS's own legal training materials say is unconstitutional!
ICE then hid the memo from the public, passing it along by word of mouth and private conversation.

Even after Trump is gone, the world will remember that he threatened to forcibly seize the territory of a peaceful democratic ally, and our institutions failed to immediately remove him. That makes US dangerously unreliable, not just one senile gangster.
The Times went to non urban Minnesota to ask people why they dislike urban Minneapolis. If someone were to ask me to teach a journalism school course on helicopter reporting, this story - so cliche itβs almost hard to believe they really did this - would immediately go on the syllabus.
