It still takes months to prepare a role, even if you only get to perform it a couple of times.
Not to mention *gestures wildly at the opera industry as a whole*.

Musicals run for weeks, months, or years. In opera you get maybe four performances - if you’re lucky.
It would be nice to be working in a genre enough people were actually interested in seeing, so you could do more than a handful of shows.
