Getting started right now
The LIVE Panther-Lair Show is back. Tune in at 8:30 pm tonight to talk about everything going on in Pitt sports - and yes, that means basketball. Lots to discuss there. 247sports.com/college/pitt...
Statement from Pitt athletic director Allen Greene on whether or not Jeff Capel will be the head coach at Pitt next season.
“Jeff and I will sit down in the coming days to evaluate the program and discuss the future.”
Cam Corhen scored a career-high 27 points in his final college game. Omari Witherspoon and Nojus Indrusaitis set career highs with 19 points each.
Final: N.C. State 98, Pitt 88
The Panthers scored a lot, but they couldn't get any kind of consistent defense. Now Pitt's season comes to a close with a final record of 13-20, and we'll see what's next.
3:57 left to play, Pitt's down 88-81 and my phone just squealed about a tornado warning. This is March.
Less than 12 minutes to play and Pitt trails N.C. State 76-65 with Omari Witherspoon going to the line for an and-1 after the break.
The Wolfpack are 11/17 from three, but they do have 8 fouls this half, so the Panthers will get some opportunities from the line.
Pitt committed 11 fouls and N.C. State shot 20 free throws.
N.C. State committed 9 fouls and Pitt shot 7 free throws.
Pitt foul trouble at halftime:
Omari Witherspoon - 3
Damarco Minor - 2
Roman Siulepa - 2
Macari Moore - 2
Cam Corhen - 1
Nojus Indrusaitis - 1
Pitt scored at least 40 first-half points in five games this season. The Panthers were 4-1 in those five games (wins over Eastern Michigan, Binghamton, Penn State and Georgia Tech; loss to Miami).
Former coaches on broadcasts:
Great hoops analysis. Terrible at judging other coaches.
Halftime: N.C. State 51, Pitt 50
The Panthers had their second-highest scoring first half of the season (they had 57 against Binghamton) with 9/16 three-point shooting, but the Wolfpack made 7 threes and - most notably - 16/20 free throws.
Are the Pitt Panthers big fans of Lord Huron? Because they're not dead yet. On today's Morning Pitt, we're looking at the standout performances in yesterday's win over Stanford, what happens next and a lot more. 247sports.com/college/pitt...
Gotta save something for the second round.
Macari Moore earned a game ball today too. Only 2 points but 5 rebounds - including 3 on offense - plus 2 steals, a block that he didn't get credit for and a really strong defensive performance.
Look man, whatever you think about the current era of Pitt hoops, that was the kind of performance you have to appreciate.
Or not. That's up to you. But it was pretty impressive.
Pitt also out-rebounded Stanford 41-28 and grabbed 20 offensive rebounds, which resulted in 25 second-chance points. The Panthers also had 44 points in the paint.
Just a gritty performance from Pitt.
Barry Dunning Jr. had a game-high 16 points on 7/10 shooting with 8 rebounds. Roman Siulepa had 14 and 7. Damarco Minor scored 4 points on 2/10 but held Ebuka Okorie to just 14 points - which might have been the biggest performance of the game.
Final: Pitt 64, Stanford 63
The Panthers win an unbelievable finish with Damarco Minor getting a put-back on his own miss to keep the season alive. Pitt advances to the second round of the ACC Tournament and will face N.C. State tomorrow.
I think he had the Cranberries going at one point too.
144 seconds left in this game and Pitt leads Stanford 59-58. Roman Siulepa has a game-high 14 points, but Cam Corhen is on the bench with 4 fouls.
Both teams have 6 fouls, so this one could slow down here as the Panthers and Cardinal play for their lives.
This really is March.
7:26 left to play and Pitt leads Stanford 55-50 after another 6-0 run for the Panthers. Some strong defensive work by Macari Moore on Ebuka Okorie the last few minutes with Damarco Minor on the bench.
After Pitt fell behind by 4, Jeff Capel called a timeout & the Panthers responded with a 6-0 run to take a 47-45 lead, forcing Stanford coach Kyle Smith to call a timeout with 11:40 left.
Both coaches know this is an elimination game - for the season. This is March.
*Second half
First media timeout of the first half and Pitt leads Stanford 39-36. Cardinal freshman Ebuka Okorie looks like he is coming alive with 4 points in the half, and the next 15:55 figure to be pretty interesting. This is March.
TV keeps saying Pitt is playing like bullies, but the Panthers only have 4 fouls, and Roman Siulepa - the biggest bully of them all - had 0 fouls in 18 minutes.
Clean bullies. This is March.
Damarco Minor can't hit the broad side of a barn right now, but he is putting in a monster effort defending Stanford star freshman Ebuka Okorie, who had 2 points and 3 turnovers in the first half.
Halftime: Pitt 31, Stanford 23
These two teams played the final 7:35 without a single stoppage, and they combined to make 8 field goals over that time. But the Panthers finished the half on an 8-0 run to take the biggest lead of the game.
Roman Siulepa has a game-high 8 points. This is March.
