This biomaterial becomes stronger when wet Nickel-linked chitosan forms a biodegradable plastic replacement

Most biobased materials soften when they’re wet. A team led by Javier G. FernΓ‘ndez at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia has now shown that the opposite can happen: add a dash of nickel to chitosan, and the material grows stronger in water. #chemsky πŸ§ͺ

Independently self-replicating RNA!
The key to transitioning from a soup of organic molecules to something resembling life was self-replication. This RNA molecule might be one of many that can do that and would have been the basis for the first cellular machinery. πŸ§ͺ
