Atlantic rain forests have become a hot topic in the UK and Ireland with demands for their restoration. But where could they go? Our PhD student Kat Chernyuk describes her first paper addressing the environmental factors: 🧪🌏🌲🌳

How can technology better support biodiversity conservation in East Africa?
Day 1 focused on tools in action, and the pathway from “data-to-impact”.
Key takeaway: monitoring technology works best when the data are accessible, supported by skills, linked to the local context.
Hi #causalsky - Has anyone done a dynamic DiD set up when we have accumulating treatments or multiple events with cumulative effects? Some units are true controls, some have one event, some have multiple at different points in time. @jmwooldridge.bsky.social @pedrosantanna.bsky.social please Repost!
Had a wonderful time today chatting about science and our journeys as scientists with Irene Lopez de Vallejo on I2 (SER) @cadenasereuskadi.bsky.social Experiencing live radio for the first time! 🎙️Thanks Jon Egaña for such a great conversation!

Great day in the field yesterday with @isatxu.bsky.social and our master's student Iñaki! We established the first part of a chronosequence to look at the dynamics of forest restoration in the Urdaibai biosphere reserve. Some decent native forest nearby will serve as a reference.
Does anyone have any additions to the conferences on this sheet? It would be good to get a community resource going because it's such a pain to try and find relevant conferences!
I'm still waiting on this manuscript - I've now been waiting over 5 months for a first review....
I'm looking for good master's students for a couple of projects I'm offering. What are the best MSc/MRes courses I should send the project descriptions to? Ideally courses should be in Europe to make logistics less complex.
Gentle reminder to fill in the survey on forest disturbance change (below). We have *a lot* of great responses already (thank you!) covering all continents and biomes, but the survey will be open for a few more days! Thanks for making the time, your disturbance expertise is highly appreciated!
However, it did make me wonder whether it would be fairer to have independent assessments of the success of schemes like this. Marking your own scorecard could surely lead to some biased answers....
Very interesting to see an assessment of how well horizon-scanning performed in predicting the arrival of non-native invasive species in the UK. Overall, it seems like the approach worked pretty well - comforting to someone who's planning to use horizon scanning in the future shorturl.at/1Nhkr
ICYMI:
Our new (in December) paper offers advice for early career scientists who want their research to help influence conservation and management policy. Lots of people say that they want to do this, but lack the policy training to do it meaningfully and usefully. Our paper can help!

What are your academic red flags that make you not want to collaborate with someone? I'll go first: Lots of detail in your website profile about how many papers you've published, the number of citations they have, and how you stack up against others (e.g. top 1%).
And authors that submit just before Christmas!
If you saw my talk at #BES2025 and took photos, could you please send them to me either here or on email? My funder likes evidence that I'm doing stuff.
Come and see me talk about factors that influence the use of scientific evidence in conservation decision making in 5 mins time (4pm) in the Lowther room. The work is part of a massive systematic review that I've been leading for the last year or so and I'm massively proud of it!
Claro, cómo voy a sobrevivir en España sin WhatsApp, la gente allí lo usa para todo. Te mando mi número por dm
Estoy de camino ahora. Llego a la hora de comer mañana a ver si podamos hablar un rato.
Starting the first leg of the annual pilgrimage to #BES2025. A quick evening stop in London and to catch-up with an old friend and then north. As excited as ever but still without any slides for my presentation...
I 100% recommend getting involved with this - it's honestly been one of the most rewarding things I've done in academia and the team at the journal are fantastic! If you're at #BES2025 next week and want to talk about the opportunity I'd be happy to share my experience.
Another poll in prep for my #BES2025 talk next week - this time about the use of scientific evidence in biodiversity conservation. Please vote and retweet to inform what I say on Tuesday afternoon!
Do you think that the average conservation decision is informed by scientific evidence?

Ha. I remember meeting you there! All being well I should be there too - would be fun to catch up!
We're looking for a 6th Senior Editor!
If you…
👉are intrigued by the interface between ecology & biological resource management
👉are interested in contributing to the journal’s strategic vision
👉have editing experience
…we’d love to hear from you!

Ok, fair. I didn't workshop the question before asking it and it's very biased towards the subset of applied ecology that I'm interested in.
It's only one week until #BES2025 kicks off - so if you could respond to this survey, and help shape my talk on the 16th, that'd be great!

Totally fair comment, I realise that this is lacking a lot of nuance!
