My photo shows a Roman floor mosaic depicting an octopus. The octopus is composed of small black tesserae (tiles) and has eight writhing arms with suckers and narrow curling tips. It is set against a white tesserae background. Octopus detail from a monochrome marine mosaic featuring Triton with a cherub and various sea creatures, including the octopus, dolphins and a cuttlefish, at the womenโ€™s changing room at the Central Baths in Herculaneum.

A circular necklace made of alternating dark and light cylindrical beads, with three larger flat, Lโ€‘shaped pendants hanging from the lower half, displayed against a black background.

This 6,000-year-old necklace offers a glimpse into the artistry of the Neolithic Schussenried culture in southwest Germany.
Its three marble pendants and jetโ€‘andโ€‘limestone beads create a striking blackโ€‘andโ€‘white contrast, characteristic of the Schussenried culture's jewellery design. ๐Ÿงต1/2

This Greek (Boeotian) terracotta dog appears to have a red piece of, um, meat in its mouth. Iโ€™m sure he earned it (โ€˜Hey, that dead guy over there wasnโ€™t using this.โ€™)

Avis Waterman: The Woman who Covered the First World War on the Italian Front for "The Times" - Stephanie Seul % % During the First World War, a woman defied the odds and became a foreign and war correspondent for The Times of London, one of the oldest and most prestigious newspapers in the world. %

For the #InternationalWomensDay, I wrote this blogpost commemorating Avis Waterman, the forgotten war correspondent of The Times, who covered the First World War on the Italian front. I have been researching her story during the last 2 years in various archives.

The photo shows an intricately designed glass figurine in the shape of a stylized fish. The fish is made of transparent, slightly yellow-tinted glass and features numerous decorative details. Its body is adorned with curved elements, including a blue wavy line above a black, round eye. The fins and tail are elaborately shaped, with the tail appearing broad. In the background, another glass figurine resembling an animal is visible. The image has taken in a exhibition setting.

We don't know what is was used for, maybe the shape relates to the content (fish sauce), maybe it was used to hold oil.

My photo shows a famous wall painting from Pompeii known as the Sappho fresco. It shows the head and upper body of a young woman framed inside a painted circular border. She faces forward. Her eyes are large and dark, gazing to one side with a calm and thoughtful expression, as if pausing mid-thought. Her skin is pale, and her hair is dark brown and tightly curled, forming small ringlets around her face. A thin golden hairnet holds her curls in place. She wears small gold hoop earrings, and a brown cloak over a green garment. In her right hand she holds a thin dark metal stylus (writing tool) up against her lips, as if thinking about what to write. In her left hand she holds a small rectangular wooden wax writing tablet. The fresco is now on display at the Muso Archeologico Nazionale in Naples

Assessing the impact of Roman occupation on England through the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) hypothesis | Antiquity The Roman occupation of England (AD 43โ€“410), characterised by urbanisation and militarisation, is generally understood to have had a negative impact on population health. Yet our understanding of associated socioeconomic changes is hindered by the comparatively limited analysis of inhumations from the preceding Iron Age. Deploying the DOHaD hypothesis, this study examines negative health markers in the skeletons of 274 adult females of childbearing age and 372 non-adults aged below 3.5 years from Iron Age and Roman contexts, revealing the long-lasting negative influence of urbanisation but with a more limited impact in rural communities implying continuation of cultural norms.

Happy #InternationalWomensDay! ๐Ÿบ

Antiquity publishes amazing #archaeology by and about women, like the work of Rebecca Pitt, who examined adult female and infant skeletons to explore the multi-generational impact of the Roman occupation of England on health.

A Roman altar dedicated to the river god Neptune & showing his symbol of a trident. Entwined around the trident is a blue dolphin.
The altar has been lit by yellow & red light to pick out the scroll work at the top with the name, the rectangular frame & the pattern at the bottom.
Thus showing that Roman altars were once coloured & not plain stone as seen in many museums.

The altars are from a shrine on the Roman bridge (Pons Aelius).

The altars were once painted & are lit to give an idea of colouring.

They were dedicated by the Sixth Legion.
