3/3 π The Barcelona Convention unites all 21 Mediterranean countries. The framework for cooperation exists.
What's missing? Political will. The fossil fuel era must end. Regional action must begin. Science gave us the roadmap. Policy must act.

2/3 Marine life under severe threat.π
What we're losing:
πΉ Corals are already bleaching
πΉ Species are migrating north.
πΉ Food chains are collapsing.
But there's still hope. Staying within 2Β°C is possible - if countries cut emissions 6% annually from 2030.
π¨ The #Mediterranean is running out of time. New study from OceanCare the Basque Center for Climate Change (BC3) shows the region's carbon budget will be exhausted by 2035 at current emission rates. The region already passed 1.5Β°C warming.

3/3 We have to remain as much as possible below the 2Β°C threshold, as defined in the Paris Agreement. And this is still achievable - if #Mediterranean countries reduce emissions by ~6% annually starting in 2030, as shown in our and BC3s latest report.

2/3 The Mediterranean's geography makes it uniquely vulnerable. As a semi-enclosed sea with limited connection to the Atlantic, it can't shed heat the way the open ocean can. Warming from surrounding land masses intensifies the effect. The region heats faster than almost anywhere else on Earth. π₯
Why is the Mediterranean a climate hotspot? π‘οΈ
The numbers:

πΉRegion Warming 20% faster than the global average
πΉSea Surface Temperature: +1.5Β°C in just 40 years.

Great to move the perspective of landlocked countries center-stage at todayβs #BBNJPrepCom side event by Austria, Nepal, the High Seas Alliance and @oceancare.bsky.social. Landlocked but ocean minded ποΈπwith the #BBNJ Agreement unlocking opportunities but also responsibilities.
Countries Gather in New York to Kickstart Implementation of High Seas Treaty www.oceancare.org/en/stories_a... via @oceancare.bsky.social. @OceanCare is on the ground to help infuse life into the #BBNJAgreement #HighSeas #Biodiversity @highseasalliance.bsky.social
Next week, the High Seas Alliance will attend the first session of the #BBNJPrepCom.
But what is PrepCom? This is where countries will shape key institutions and processes to bring the #HighSeasTreaty to life.
Stay tuned for more information and updates on this important meeting! buff.ly/FwauOk4
Seal pups are increasingly at risk as storms intensify due to climate change. A new study links extreme weather to a sharp rise in injuries and rescues. Urgent action is needed to protect marine wildlife.
