The Longing (2020) is a good example: the gameplay consists largely of waiting around and getting lost in an underground labyrinth, but it uses that frustration to explore isolation, despair, and the search for meaning. The game becomes a genuinely moving experience if you meet it on its own terms.

Hey #PitchYaGame!
I'm making "Beaux-Arts," a surrealist horror game about being held prisoner by the residents of a countryside estate.
Try to convince the family to let you out alive while you admire the priceless artwork that adorns the walls of your prison.

I think I discovered my new least-favorite kind of #gamedev bug: the one with an extremely easy and obvious fix that doesn't work for unknown reasons.
That way, players run into the bug and think: "This should be really easy to fix, why the dev hasn't dealt with it yet?"

A promotional image for Beaux-Arts's participation in the Six One Indie Showcase
Very happy for Beaux-Arts to be part of the @sixoneindie.com Showcase this weekend! Feel free to check it out alongside all sorts of other cool-looking indies.
And if you're interested, there's a public demo for Beaux-Arts that's coming (hopefully!) quite soon.

In Defense of Boring Games
In which I argue for the benefits of boredom as an intentional game design tool.
I finally got my website working, so here's a blog post about why boring games are cool, actually, and we need more of them:

After a fair bit of work, I'm pleased by the unnecessary fanciness of the new reading system: 3D books! Animated pages! Dynamic book stacking!

It's been a while since I posted about Beaux-Arts, so here's a tour of the dining room for #screenshotsaturday.
You'll be able to interact with most of the artwork in this level to get a closer view and prompt a little dialogue about each one.

I just got back from #NarraScope engorged with ideas and in need of hibernation.
It's been wonderful meeting all sorts of people who are also into weird, experimental narrative stuff

Doing some work on the basement area. This part is (loosely) inspired by Piranesi's Imaginary Prisons series:

The player character stands by the side of the road, looking at a blank road sign.
The player character stands at the entrance to a large formal garden.
A neo-classical living room with Grecian-style statues in the four corners holding up the ceiling, which is painted to look like the sky.
The player character looking down an unlit hallway at night.
Wow, just in the past day a bunch of new people are following me. Not quite sure why, but welcome!
I'm currently making Beaux-Arts, a surrealist narrative-adventure game about being imprisoned in a countryside estate. If that sounds up your alley, then you can wishlist it on Steam!

A giant marble head stands in the middle of a foggy forest, surrounded by red flowers trailing into the distance.
Currently doing some visual touch-ups to the forest. The scene is running pretty well now that I finally have proper LODs on the trees.

For #screenshotsaturday this week, here's a time lapse of me trial-and-erroring my way to the current living room design in Beaux-Arts.

An image of the player character standing in a closet with the inventory window open. The inventory icons are basic placeholder images.
An image of the player character standing in the same closet with the inventory window open. The inventory icons are moderately better-looking.
I finally replaced my old, slapdash inventory icons with less hideous alternatives. It's done a surprising amount to help me mentally recognize Beaux-Arts as an actual game, rather than just a janky Unity project.

Interesting! This is my first time hearing about game, and it's a neat concept. I'll have to do some looking and see how they're dealing with copyright and such, but it could definitely be a good resource. Thanks for the recommendation.

I'm eternally grateful to museums that provide CC0 public domain scans of their holdings available online.
Beaux-Arts currently has ~80 paintings and lithographs, and that number will probably go up before I'm done.

Currently messing around with some fog effects. Early results are promising, though I'm still trying to figure out how to make/fake good-looking volumetric fog in Unity.

Thanks! There are, in fact, hedge mazes at the estate, though I'll probably leave them for optional exploration rather than anything mandatory.

The player looking out across a moonlit hallway with blue, floral-patterned wallpaper.
Kinda forgot that I created this account a few months back, so it's probably time to actually post something.
So: Hello! I'm currently working on Beaux-Arts, a surrealist horror game about being imprisoned in a countryside estate.
