The thing is once you get off the 22s and 17s and 3s northern Jersey is awesome. Like every little town full of good and varied food, shopping districts, random immigrant and ethnic stores, good bars, etc. Union, Bloomfield, Edison, Clifton, etc.

Diamond Hill road. Sounds awesome, but it sucks.

I live in Maplewood. There are spots on 22 where the quickest/safest way home is to go west on 22, north on a perilously curvy and poorly lit road between a huge building material quarry and wilderness, and east on 78 via a merge no more than 15 feet long — rather than just drive back on 22.
