Probably because they’ve been convinced that paying them properly means that an orange will cost $30. It doesn’t mean that at all but as a formerly convinced idiot myself, I think that’s probably it.
@ezachbell
Take it from a conservative, conservatives have gone off the deep end. I hope that rationalism returns eventually. Air ambulance pilot constantly questioning if going to work for an airline is worth leaving the fun stuff in small aircraft behind.
Probably because they’ve been convinced that paying them properly means that an orange will cost $30. It doesn’t mean that at all but as a formerly convinced idiot myself, I think that’s probably it.
In the end it looks like competition and sensible labor market regulation is the secret herbs and spices mix. Not tech bros investing billions and billions of losses into a cynical play at market dominance and wide scale indentured servitude.
Crazy huh?
Uber simply shouldn’t exist unless it treats its drivers fairly and honestly that probably means it just shouldn’t exist because there’s nothing Uber does that any #taxi company exposed to #competition can’t do on its own.
So what happens in Victoria? Well it’s entirely possible that Uber pulls out of Victoria entirely and if they do, that’s probably ultimately for the best. Victorians have been treated to a phantom product pretending to be real but in reality they’re just taking from drivers the same as all of us.
But not to worry for Uber because there’s always another driver willing to buy the lie and drive into a hole in the hopes of earning enough to eat.
When you can’t replace your shocks, you’re tires are balding, you’re stretching every oil change an extra 500 miles and you can’t find other work, you’re stuck and that’s not an accident. At a certain point you’re just trading value in your car for cash and that only lasts so long.
It’s not just domination of market competition that Uber was investing in during those early days, it was also domination of the labour pool.
Uber has taken considerable pains to ensure that ride share drivers are desperately chasing every dollar in hopes of breaking a cycle of spiralling poverty.
Consumers too were promised low cost and high quality but whatever remains of that has left us with drivers who can’t even replace their shocks because they’re unable to earn enough.
We’ve bought into the lie that we can have a great product for next to nothing and our delusion is costing workers.
The “golden age” of ride-share was never really a golden age so much as it was a covert theft from workers who were duped by promises of a bright new future as we condemned the inefficiencies of the past. But it was all a lie and even today we desperately cling to promises less and less delivered.
We have to thank Uber for driving innovation in the marketplace. It’s tough to find a traditional cab company now without a proper mobile app and fare tracking has become more commonplace to protect consumers by all that’s come at a cost and it’s ride-share drivers who have paid it.
Uber’s concern at the time wasn’t a quality product, it was the provision of an unrealistically high quality, low cost product meant to drive competitors out of business.
This investment would set them up for market dominance after which they could finally degrade the product, pay less and profit.
See, also can in the day even drivers didn’t need tips to survive, Uber was also hemorrhaging enough cash every year to pay off some sovereign debts. This was part of the plan though. It was just an investment in the future deterioration of their product.
Yup. An investment in future quality loss.
Today, Uber drivers in Victoria BC voted to #unionize. Back in the day when drivers were well compensated, no one had any notable desire to unionize. So what changed?
Uber’s entire business model is predatory and this development was inevitable. So too is Uber’s eventual collapse.
I take #Uber often, especially when I’m on work trip. I always tip; I shouldn’t have to. I don’t want to.
Many might not remember but once upon a time Uber boasted the complete lack of a tip option because their drivers were well compensated. It was a DEFINING feature of the ride-share disruptor.
Poilievre is already struggling to maintain relevance. He lost the election because his entire strategy was based on being an alternative to a leader that had become extremely unpopular. Now contrasted against a qualified Liberal PM, he can’t depend on his opposition being more unlikable than him.
Donald Trump is fighting Adam Smith and Smith never loses. I’d really like pro Trump “conservatives” to explain to this conservative what, if anything, Trump is doing that’s described in Wealth Of Nations, once considered a seminal conservative text.
“Once” being like…until a few months ago.
So if Trump appointed Gov’ Walz to the board of governors does that make Tim Walz MAGA or does that make you brain damaged?
Flipped? He was always MAGA.
Mostly Trump supporting moron fascist.
So you don’t think a Republican can be appointed to a NON PARTISAN advisory board?
Did Trump make Walz NAGA the day he appointed him to the board of governors?
Stop acting brain damaged and use your head.
Did you read your own source? Cause that’s not what it says.
So wait…if Walz appointing him to a non partisan advisory board makes the shooter a democrat, does Trump appointing Walz to the board of governors make Walz MAGA?
Or maybe you’re just brain damaged. 🤔
And they’d enlist this guy?
www.youtube.com/watch?v=jf5z...
Seems more likely that he’s just a right wing religious extremist. You know…a MAGAt.
Yeah. He was appointed to a non partisan board to provide input to the government. He was still a registered Republican.
Sides, if Walz appointing him to a board makes him connected then Trump appointing Walz to the board of governors makes Walz MAGA…if you’re brain damaged.
If this makes him a democrat than Trump appointing Walz to the board of governors must mean Walz is MAGA. 😂
He didn’t work for the democrats. He was appointed to a non partisan board to provide input to the government.
Prime minister @mark-carney.bsky.social first press conference basically boiled down to Axe the Tax, Build the Homes, Get the Deal and Fix the Budget.
Except…not in lame sloganeering kinda way.
@mark-carney.bsky.social
To demonstrate ethical integrity and sound judgement I strongly suggest you fire Paul Chiang and boot him from the Liberal Party. Encouraging threats and foreign interference in our elections process is simply not excusable.
#Yukon premier Ranj Pillai says that negotiation is always an option with President #Trump. I don’t know where that thinking comes from. Nothing he’s promised has been honoured. How do you negotiate with someone who’s word means nothing?
Any agreements made are completely unreliable in such a case.
It’s wild to me that not only are democrats treated better by Canadians and Mexicans than republicans but that Americans in general are just treated better by Canadians and Mexicans than republicans.
“America First” unless you disagree I guess. Then…🤷🏻
