We're hosting the Australasian Quaternary Association conference here in Sydney in July.
Registration and abstracts deadlines are coming soon.
I'm planning to lead a Wombeyan Caves pre-conference fieldtrip, maybe more tbd.

New pre-print: groundwater recharge in Australia.
- Annual rainfall recharge thresholds (RRT) are similar everywhere.
Seasonality is pronounced; recharge is rare in summer or autumn.
This should be accounted for in groundwater modelling and management.

Itβs not what you have, itβs how you use itβeven when it comes to the distribution of dissolved organic carbon in the ocean. The type of DOC is less important than how many bacteria are around to eat it, modeling suggests.

How does water get underground β and how much rainfall is needed to replenishΒ it?
Thanks to the amazing UNSW team for producing this story on our groundwater and climate research: past, present and future, featuring Marilu Melo Zurita, Martin Andersen, Ellen Corrick, Danyang Sun, Akhilesh Kumar,β¦
And also this YouTube Short that didn't make the 'long read'. Hopefully useful for groundwater educators: youtube.com/shorts/57smo...
Thank you for the invite!
Thanks! We have an amazing media team
Yes, for me, review requests from many overseas funding bodies in Europe, N America, Asia, Oceania.

As a rare climate scientist working in Silicon Valley, I've been drinking from the AI firehose a lot more than my peers. I thought it would be helpful to lay out my experiences of both the promise and pitfalls of using AI to accelerate scientific research:
On stealth corrections to the academic record.
That is, changes made by the publisher after publication, with no notice given.
Guess what? MDPI are caught moving articles out of special issues post.

Screenshot of a statement from SVP that they find βno policy violationsβ in having members appear in the Epstein letters
Really SVP? Youβre just going to ignore decades of sexual and academic misconduct, marrying a student AT one of your conferences, and every report Iβve filed (implying thatβs what you do with reports) to defend famous Horner? Youβd rather have pedophiles than students is your message?
10 am photo, unpacked but still boxed.
Lunchtime, everything unpacked and ready to assemble.
Home time, with the autosampler to assemble tomorrow.
We took delivery of a new ABB off axis water isotopes analyser today here at UNSW, to replace our 10 year old instrument.
It was a good day in lab with spanners and swagelocks. To be continued tomorrow....
Sharing these three-year early career fellowships at Durham University, UK. Open to all nationalities and disciplines. I was lucky to have a senior fellowship here many years ago and had a very positive experience. Details are below:

Heliyon has published fewer papers and ramped up its retractions since a major indexing service put the journal on hold and the publisher launched an audit of all papers published in the journal since its launch in 2016.

Forget pickles and ice cream. I published a fake paper on pregnancy cravings for prime numbers.
A reminder, American Geophysical Union honours nominations are open at the moment! The @agu.org Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology section have three Honours available, for all career stages. Please share...

Any NOLA peeps recognize this very sweet boy? Just found him running across Canal st in mid city. Followed a friend to The Station coffee where I snagged him (and many many many kisses)
Map of the GreenWay in Inner West Sydney. GreenWay to the left.
Geology art on the Greenway - local sandstone geology as seen using terracotta and more.
For Sydneysiders: I walked the GreenWay this week, and recommend it. Great art and interpretation, and easy access from L1 Light Rail stations. Good for walking and cycling - I have to go back on the bike and explore the connecting cycleways.
