It was a direct response to a humanitarian disaster. It raised millions and saved lives. Rather than imposing the values of 2024 on a charity single from 1984, why not expend your energies fretting about the injustices going on around us right now?

People are taking the lyrics of a 40-year-old song too literally. It did its job, it raised the money. The words convey a certain cynicism that people are either choosing to ignore or missing. The lyrics were chosen to provoke a reaction among the British public and get them to buy the single.
