Finally we divide the conference into three for a series of round table discussions. You'll be able to select from discussions around formaldehyde-free embalming, bequest and HTA discussion, and discussions around technicians experiences in Anatomy before we close out the conference.
We'll then hear from Carys Davies and Kate Sparey and their experiences of managing whole body (and pet) donation schemes.
After Lucy, we'll hear from Laura Oliver and her experiences of creating engaging social media content for modern students of a discipline that traditionally shies away from the limelight.
After a break for lunch we hear about Lucy Hyde's work to give every donor a story. She has been recreating the faces of Bristol’s “silent teachers” in memoriam. It’s a moving and powerful reminder of the individuals who make anatomical education possible - you wont look at osteology the same way!
Option 2 sees us heading into Dr Scott Abbott Paterson’s workshop, “From Dissection to Diversity,”. This workshop will explore how we can make anatomy teaching more inclusive and representative. From teaching materials to the classroom environment, Scott will share practical ideas with us all
Option 1 - Hips in 5 movement class with Dr Suzanne Scott - putting her years of working with elite athletes into practice!
We will then split the conference down the middle, and attend one of two concurrent workshops. Which workshop will you pick?
Day two will kick off (pun intended) with energy! Dr Suzanne Scott, lecturer and movement consultant to elite sports athletes, will be talking about “The Athlete Hip.” She’ll explore the unique anatomy and movement demands of athletes, offering insights that blend sports science with anatomy.
After our final talk of the day, we will enjoy a tour of Bristol's fine Anatomy facilities, before we gather at The Bristol Hotel for the conference dinner. Expect great food, warm conversation, and stunning Harbourside views as the sun goes down.
Our final talk of the day focusses on Kirsty Nelson's outstanding osteological preparations! From bare bones to a fully feathered masterpiece, Kirsty Nelson will show how she built an owl skeleton complete with flight feathers. It’s a fascinating mix of technical skill and biological wonder! 🦉
🧑🔬 The future of anatomy depends on passionate, skilled prosectors — and Ed Zealley is on the lookout for them! In his presentation on the Student Prosectorship Scheme, Ed will share how the next generation is being trained and inspired.
Dr Rebecca Shepherd will then show us what Raman Spectroscopy can tell us about ivory! Her fascinating talk will show how this powerful tool can distinguish between legal and illegal samples, helping to protect endangered species and enforce conservation laws. 🐘⚖️
After all of that modelling we'll have worked up an appetite, so time to break for lunch - and the opportunity to catch up with our colleagues from across the UK!
👄👐 Then it is time to roll up our sleeves! Lucy Hyde’s Mouth Modelling Workshop is a hands-on, interactive session where we’ll create our own anatomical models in the Human Dissection Room. It’s a fun and practical way to deepen our understanding of oral anatomy! 🎨🧠
🦴📚 Following on from Jo, Tom Cornwall knows how to make bones speak! In his session on skeletal articulation, Tom will share how anatomical techniques can be woven into undergraduate teaching to make the subject come alive. 🧠💀
🔬🧵 Dr Jo Tomlinson will then take us beyond what the eye can see in her talk on collagen-rich tissues. These structural powerhouses play a vital role in our bodies, and Jo will reveal how their mechanical and structural properties can be visualised in exciting new ways. 👀💡
After a warm welcome from the University of Bristol's Professor of Anatomy Prof Michelle Spear, Dr Craig Johnson will open the conference with his talk “Of Mice (dogs, cows, pigs, crocodiles…) and Men,” which dives into the fascinating world of comparative anatomy. 🐭🐶🐄🐊
