This week is National Empty Homes Week.
We have over 750 vacant properties in the North Somerset Council area.
Some North Somerset residents will not just be living close to abandoned properties, but may also have adjoining walls, shared roofs and parallel gardens.
We need change that is durable, meaningful, and built to last with evergreen legislation that won't wilt under the spotlight of well funded social media companies.

1,309 residents across North Somerset have written to me calling for action. I hear you, and I share your desire to act quickly.
But we also have to get this right. A well-intentioned law that can't be enforced doesn't protect a single child.
That's why I suggested a windfall tax on social media companies who have profited from harming our children. The revenue could fund our youth services, mental health support, and education programmes for a generation that has been let down.
I made the case that Big Tech must be held to account, they have built their billion dollar business models on addictive platforms. Like the tobacco industry, they knew the damage being done, and they chose profit over protection.
Yesterday, during the Children and Wellbeing Schools Bill, I spoke on the Lords' Amendment to raise the age to access social media to 16.

I continue to be incredibly impressed by the level of debate skills shown by students from across #NorthSomerset.
A huge well done to all those who participated in the second round of my North Somerset Debate Competition last week.
The debate topic was “This house believes that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a threat to humanity and this Government must control it in all it's forms” and was rejected.
It is important to recognise the NHS staff, carers, volunteers, and key workers across #NorthSomerset and the country who pulled together to get the country through one of the hardest periods.
Today we remember the more than 250,000 people in the UK who lost their lives to COVID-19, and think of those families, friends, and colleagues who continue to carry that loss.
Today is COVID-19 Day of Reflection.
During the pandemic, I worked on the front-line in pharmacy, saw the sacrifice of so many and mourned patients lost. It is a time that has stayed with me.

New requirements will make it a requirement for schools to have Allergy awareness training for staff, spare EpiPens and improved recording systems for incidents and contingency plans.

Research showed that in 2024, 70% of schools in England did not have the recommended allergy safeguards in place, and half of all schools did not have adrenaline pens and spare auto-injectors on site.
Schools will finally be made safer for those with allergies, under a new law named after five-year-old Benedict, who died from an allergic reaction at school in 2021.
Lords reform is no longer a niche concern, it's urgent and I am glad to be part of this vital work.
