MPs give ministers powers to restrict entire Internet MPs have rejected a Lords amendment to the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill that would allow a social media ban for under 16s.

🚨 Wide ranging powers have been voted through to restrict Internet access 🚨

Ministers will be able to impose digital ID checks, curfews and VPN restrictions without Parliamentary scrutiny.

This can be used on websites, social media, apps and games with no need to show there's any harm to children.

The landscape of Northern France is characterised by a patchwork of small fields and woods interconnected by a dense network of hedges. It has it's own term - 'Bocage'.

any 1920s arts/theatre people following me who can place this front row? ... they're in the 1926 news reel about the theatre (mocking it as for 'high-brows') and I'm sure carefully set up for the camera, but I'm still wondering if they're well-known figures or caricatures of 'artsy' people

A private individual recently contacted Museum Plantin‑Moretus after spotting our historical library stamp in a book bought at a flea market. Photos showed two clear impressions of our round stamp on the title page.

Italy buys rare Caravaggio portrait for €30m The purchase is part of wider plans to prevent major artworks from being bought by private collectors.

I've always been saddened when important cultural works by great masters disappear into private hands, rarely if ever seen again.

Well done to #Italy for this approach, and what a wonderful first success!

Sadly the report still has him saying:

"It was an honour to see expert collectors taking these coins into their care"

Rather than:

"I enjoyed selling the coins for a lot of money to a group of wealthy anonymous buyers"

Must have been an honest slip of the tongue...

'Extinct' butterfly spotted across England A butterfly classed as extinct in the UK for more than 30 years has been seen at sites across southern England.Eagle-eyed nature lovers have captured photographs of Large Tortoiseshells in Kent, Hamps...

Large Tortoiseshell has been recorded at six counties in the south of England in the last few weeks.
Its been recorded on a handful of UKBMS transects in the south east in the last few years. Will we see it expand and consolidate its foothold this year..?

In case anyone's wondering - this is why they're annoying - this is part of a single scan - Galway itself, in perfect focus. But as you then bump onto the bit on the cover to the top right of this bit, and everything goes fuzzy.

I put this figure of Needham's model of a Bell Beaker/Corded Ware fusion into PowerPoint, and I kid you not the auto-generated caption was 'Map of the Battle of Brexit'.

Home - Human Authored In a world of generative AI, recognising human creativity is vital This is why we’re developing a Human Authored mark to enable all types of writers and literary translators to label their work as Hum...

The @societyofauthors.bsky.social Human Authored scheme launches today. I am really interested to find out what verification process it's going to use.

Now a computer can only work with what you feed it. An AI might look for a place in Lincs that is spelled similar to Olbidge but they are not going to find Holbeach phonetically

Because they can’t fucking think

And you can

I have seen a lot of people worrying about AI in family history.

I was looking at an 1851 census entry recently where the place of birth was Olbidge, Lincs

That was how it was written, that was how it had been transcribed

10.03.2026 09:24 πŸ‘ 10 πŸ” 2 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 1

But I have lived on the fens my whole life, and that’s how people from Holbeach say it, even now

Sure enough, found her baptismal record at Holbeach church

Thus perfectly demonstrating - lack of respect for a woman saying no, getting angry about women having boundaries - why a woman might want a female painter.
