This is true but I think it's important to clarify: we still know how to produce knowledge. Science, journalism, etc. still basically work, if done well. The crisis is that people don't trust those institutions any more. I'd characterize it as a social-trust problem.

One thing I feel ought to be discussed more is the fact that basically all rural and suburban places in the US are subsidized by cities. They resent cities. They insult cities. They elect politicians who abuse cities. But none of them could survive without cities.

At least for the presidency, it’s not about what you identify as, it’s about choosing between two viable organizations. Until 3rd parties take a hold in congress voting for them for the presidency is not only only a spoiler, it’s also a setup for a failed administration.
I always vote, even if I don’t like any of the candidates. Because one of them is always worse.

Seems to me that ICE agents threading arrest to people following and watching them is a false equivalence when what those people are witnessing is those agents breaking windows and dragging people out of cars

A lot of people avoid politics because it’s overwhelming and they don’t want to be hopelessly depressed. So they check out and then check back in when it’s time for a presidential election. This is how we got to where we are now. We won’t get out of it until this changes.
