Oo theres a discord and a #horrorsky here also. Will be checking this out!
I guess I need an obligatory #fridaythe13th post so Iโm getting it out of the way early. Hereโs me an my son - his name is Jason. After the Greek hero, not the ruthless killer. And being a dad and an editor/filmmaker means he gets to have a totally awesome childhood
Anyway. Here I am. Got over the 5-year writerโs block. Have a couple feature going through 2nd draft. A job thats still paying me in an industry thats on life support. And really awesome wife and kid.
Gonna make movies again. No idea where this goes next. But, thatโs kind of always been the point.
And somewhere in the middle of all that the thing I loved most didnโt die. It just kept sliding lower on the priority list. Year after year.
Until one day I looked down and it was basically living in my basement. Eating my cereal. Just staring at me. Like, โoh how nice of you to drop by.โ
Came back through post. Learned Avid. Spent the last decade editing television.
Also grew a bonsai. Had a kid. Started a UFO channel. Learned how to mix colognes. Watch people play with the beta version of Skynet (guilty of that myself) and see all my tin-foil-hat theories come true. Normal stuff.
It was a horrible two years. Having to pretend to be something you arenโt. But i met my future wife. And quit the normal job. Dead broke, down and out for months.
Until I found my way back in.
I remember everyone freaking when the GL came out. I thought it was really cool. Digital film. Then the iphone happened. Then the 5D happened.
Then everyone on earth became a filmmaker. So I took a normal job.
I made a lot of things for a while. But Iโm an older millennial so you gotta rememberโฆwe canโt have nice things. Not in this economy. Or that one. Gen X really had it made, man.
My mom always used to say stop being a wussy.
Made a short film after that. Tightened up. Actually knew what I was doing this time.
It played festivals. The same exact people who once poo-pooed me said very kind things.
The internet was always weird. Who knew it would get a lot weirder.
Then I made a horror movie with my best friend eventually with $5000, about weed that turned people into zombies.
Bloody Disgusting named it one of the worst horror movies of 2009.
I framed it while I was crying and considering giving up.
I bought every filmmaking book I could find. Watched movies (obviously) and taught myself to shoot and edit on gear that was not meant for filmmaking.
It was the summer I was nineteen. I finished my first year of college. That was the end of my college adventure. Never went back. Zero plan.
Just an unshakeable belief that I was supposed to make movies. My parents thought I had lost my mind.
They were not entirely wrong.
Ok. First post. Here we go.
[cue the Wonder Years theme. Kevin, on your mark, ACTION!]
So I guess youโre wondering how I ended up hereโฆ.
Thank you for the lead. Iโll follow along!
You make more friends with fruit punch and pie.
Thanks Jason! I may have peaked at โIโm brand new to the space!โ Itโs all downhill from here. But I brought snacks.
I come in peace.
