Weβve launched @liberalism.org! Itβs a online journal of liberal ideas, exploring the ways liberalism points to a better future and how we can get there, from me and my @theihs.org colleagues @jkuznicki.bsky.social and @uncanonical.net, and feature essays from top scholars, podcasts, and more.
"An open society does not leave us adrift. Rather, it creates a positive feedback loop that actively rewards the very traitsβtolerance, curiosity, mutual respect, delight in othersβ successβthat lead to ethical, happy, and flourishing lives. Our liberalism is open." - @aaronrosspowell.com
I know there are parts of Bluesky that hate the term, but I think liberalism is grand, and not just worth defending, but worth viewing at the best way to a better future for everyone. Thatβs why my team and I at @theihs.org have launched @liberalism.org. And hereβs what I mean by βliberalismβ:
We're live! @liberalism.org is a new journal of ideas from @theihs.org. Today we kick off with an essay from @emilychamleewright.bsky.social, who writes: "The opportunity to build a liberal future is real, but that future will not build itself."
Liberalism is both under threat and at a turning point.
It must be argued for, refined, and renewed.
Today, we begin the work.
Itβs so good to be building something that I can believe in.
Watch this space.
Human flourishing begins with freedom.

The late great Steve Horwitz, less than a month into the first Trump presidency, already fully understanding the shape of things:
A good Douglass essay to dust off is Our Composite Nation, in which he defends open borders and the vision of a diverse, pluralist America.
If thereβs one thing we know how to do itβs BREAK ICE
I'm just gonna leave this here. RIP to one of the greats. www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwLZ...
An entire community of thousands, here legally, having been demonized with deranged lies about eating pets, is about to be arbitrarily DECLARED illegal so they can be forcibly ethnically cleansed. I donβt want to hear one more fucking word about comparisons to Nazi Germany being overwrought.
My ReImagining Liberty podcast is on a short hiatus because I am working on a very cool and very big New Thing, which I can't wait to get out into the world.
This makes me feel more patriotic than the national anthem ever could

"Abolishing ICE is not enough. They must be held accountable."
this is what i want as the party line
it's time, the base want it, & i genuinely think the public are ready for it
"On this 250th anniversary year of the Declaration of Independence ... this looks like a Boston Massacre ... Let this be the beginning of the end for ICE and for this president."

βICE is only going after the worst of the worst, only violent criminals.β
βOkay, ICE is going after all immigrants.β
βICE is going after anyone who obstructs them.β
YOU ARE HERE β
βYes, we want ICE to brutalize anyone who disagrees with us β and you should be afraid.β
I sympathize with Bongino, if u made me deputy director at the fbi where I couldnβt vlog with my homies as much, I would hate that and want to quit immediately
I can't believe the winner of the FIFA Peace Prize would do this.
Wash Post: U.S. forces struck Islamic State targets in northwestern Nigeria on Thursday evening, the U.S. and Nigerian governments said, acting after threats by President Donald Trump to attack the country in an effort to stop killings of Christians.
Wash Post: The Department of Homeland Security has announced the end of temporary protected status for a group of nearly 4,000 Burmese nationals β mostly persecuted Christians and democracy advocates. This action will send them back to a junta bent on punishing them.

The CBS investigation portrays a modern concentration camp, similar to the Soviet GULAG (like CECOT, an acronym): sadistic guards, 24 hour lighting, isolation cells.
Americans once opposed this inhumane system.
The Trump administration sent innocent people there to suffer.

The story is light on details as to this context, but the film canβt be separated from it. The real world lingers on the fringes, seeping into the plot and ignored as personal stakes are raised, only to come roaring back with a vengeance.
