This is the second publication in a series that identifies shallow peatlands as sentinels, potentially alerting us to stresses likely to face deeper peatlands under #ClimateChange. Stay tuned for more! #peat #carbon #wildfire
Excited to share that our research group's latest "Survival of the Deepest" paper has been accepted! We outline how strengths of several ecohydrological feedbacks are likely different between #peatlands of different depths, leading to increased vulnerability of shallow systems.
Really grateful that I had the chance to learn from Gracie & help out with this Georgian Bay Biosphere video!
It's been really great to be involved with this work, as well as helping the community understand the importance of mosses in recovery after a fire!

They help the otherwise bare surface to gradually accumulate material, so eventually shrubs and grasses (and eventually trees) can grow in the deeper soil.
Mosses are essential "soil builders" - they grow on the bare #CanadianShield rock and trap loose material, like leaves, pine needles, and sand, as well as seeds and pollen from other plants. #research #restoration #EnvironmentalScience
In the McMaster Ecohydrology Lab, we've been studying how #moss transplants can help to kickstart vegetation recovery after a severe #wildfire.

For context, I lead smoking litter cleanups and have seen firsthand how extensive this problem is - we picked up ~70,000 cigarette butts in #Niagara during the 2022 #ButtBlitz ๐ฌ ๐ฌ @agreenerfuture.bsky.social
I understand that it fits the character's overall image, but it still irks me ๐ The more we can do to minimize public acceptance of this, the better! #SlowHorses
Really enjoying watching Slow Horses, but I hate how often Gary Oldman is shown throwing cigarettes on the ground.... multiple times per episode! ๐ฏ๐ญ We need to stop normalizing this #PlasticPollution in media. #SmokingLitter
This year, I was excited to nominate a peaty #SciComm paper for the #NobelPeatPrize! Winner to be announced soon ๐
