Legislature passes law capping annual minimum wage bumps, creates โyouthโ wage below $15 โข Nebraska Examiner
Nebraska's minimum wage will annually increase at 1.75%, not by the cost of living, and certain teen workers can be paid a subminimum wage.
At a time when so many of us are worried about cost of living, Nebraska lawmakers' answer is to restrict the minimum wage increases we voted for and carve out lower wages for young workers. It's so disappointing to see how many lawmakers voted to disrespect the will of the people.

We are horrified by this situation and wishing a swift full recovery to the injured student. Our ability to come together peacefully in protest is a core American freedom, and all of us should be safe when we show up and speak out for our communities.

In Gov. Pillen's State of the State, he bragged about restricting abortion access and opening an immigrant detention center while renewing his calls for censorship in universities and ending our system of splitting electoral votes. None of these things make Nebraska freer, safer, or stronger.

Nebraska lawmakers invited to McCook ICE facility, but reps continue call for unscheduled access
Despite a newly scheduled tour, some Nebraska lawmakers continue to push for their right to access the state-run, federally funded facility in McCook as they please.
State law says members of the Nebraska Legislature "shall be allowed to visit any facility in the Department of Correctional Services at any time." A tightly controlled walkthrough more than a month after a senator first sought access is a far cry from meaningful oversight.

How Gov. Jim Pillen said he prevented pro-Palestinian protests on UNL campus
"If one student puts a stake in the ground, weโre arresting them. Weโre not letting this crap take place in Nebraska,โ the governor recalled telling NU President Jeffrey Gold.
This is simple: the First Amendment protects a broad range of speech everywhere, including campus, and the governmentโs response to a protest should have nothing to do with how a politician feels about a cause.

Nebraska ranks near top of U.S. in prison overcrowding, OIG of Corrections reports
Nebraska ranks first in prison overcrowding when measured by operational capacity, second behind Alabama where the crowding is measured by design capacity.
It's the same headline year after year: Nebraska remains home to some of the most overcrowded prisons in the country. We can't build our way out of prison overcrowding. It's past time for meaningful reform to get people out and keep people out.

Nebraskans overwhelmingly voted for earned paid sick leave, but even as we celebrate that progress we need to remember lawmakers chose to weaken that victory. This year, before what voters passed could even go into effect, a majority of state senators amended the law to exclude thousands of workers.

Nebraska law requiring paid sick leave goes into effect in October
All employees will be required to receive paid sick leave, with exceptions of those under 16, seasonal agriculture workers and small businesses with 10 or fewer employees.
Today, Nebraskaโs new paid sick leave law goes into effect, a win that will give more workers than ever before the ability to care for their health without risking their paycheck. Voters supported this change with 75% approval last fall, making it clear that we value healthy families and workplaces.
