A hand holding a postcard of a four-panel comic in a Mary-Worth-esque art style. At the top it says PROVIDENCE in letters that outline bits of the cityβs skyline. Byline reads: BY THE MAD PECK, DOC DANIELS, I.C.LOTZ, & THE FRONT PORCH Panel 1: βPROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND. WHERE IT RAINS TWO DAYS OUT OF THREE EXCEPT DURING THE RAINY SEASON WHEN IT SNOWS LIKE A BITCHβ A woman in a vampy dress runs through the rain. Offpanel, someone says βA MESS, AIN'T IT?β Panel 2: βAND FRIENDSHIP IS A ONE WAY STREETβ Two cars crash in front of a street sign that reads Friendship and One Way Panel 3: βRICH FOLKS LIVE ON POWER STREET.β Three obviously rich women lounge in a room; itβs raining outside Panel 4: βBUT MOST OF US LIVE OFF HOPE.β Two couples, dressed in more working-class clothes, dance in front of a phonograph
I just learned that the artist behind this iconic comic, a copy of which hung in my apartments off Hope for a decade and still hangs in my faraway house today, died in March.
Godspeed.
Kudos to the Brown University students who are posting continuous live updates, spaced just minutes apart, on the campus shooting. A lot of grace and professionalism under immense pressure.
