From Scotia Hille of Act on Mass: “Legislative staff deserve a future in the public sector and a future in the State House.”
From staffer Casey Pease: “Having seen the dedication and hard work of staff firsthand, the right to collectively bargain is not only fair but deserved.”
From staffer Jack Breen: “I firmly believe collective bargaining would do much to address staffers’ concerns, which our latest survey has shown are pay and career advancement, among others.”
From staffer Will Woodring: “This turnover is because of issues with salary, with workplace conditions, and with much more. I know people who have left because they can’t afford to live in Boston on a State House salary. People leave because they can’t afford to raise their child.”
From former staffer Kelsey Rode: “I was the only staffer in my office during COVID and had to learn how to handle unemployment cases on the fly.”
From former staffer Morgan Simko: “We’re a pro-labor state, we’re a majority blue state, this movement has bipartisan support, and we need to preserve the right to collectively bargain now more than ever as we see workers’ rights crumble at the federal level.”
From former staffer Shelly MacNeill: “Leaders who genuinely value their employees should give them a seat at the table to address their concerns.”
From @jonathan of @progressivemass.bsky.social: “Staff do so much to make the legislature work. They’re the reason why this hearing is happening today.”
From Kevin Holland of IBEW 2222: “The rights of workers to band together to form a union is a foundational right and should never be denied.”
From Rep. Lisa Field: “My aide should have the right to a union that her colleagues in other state agencies have.”
From Rep. Rodney Elliott: “Like our late colleague Rep. Doherty, I deeply respect the dignity of work… We know staff deserve the same opportunity to advocate for better wages and conditions like everyone else.”
From Senator Paul Feeney: “It should not be lost on us the fundamental question before us - do we support the right to collectively bargain for all workers? If so, we should pass this bill.”
From @senjohnkeenan.bsky.social: “This Legislature rightly prides itself on being a pro-union body. Our staff, our team members, the people we rely on for so much, are asking for the right to collectively bargain. Why don't we extend to them what we so proudly support for others?"
From staffer Ravi Simon: "There are certainly still issues, but the House has noticeably improved in the last two years in all of these respects. All of that said, staff shouldn't have to communicate about our workplace issues through the format of a committee hearing."
From @senmikemoore.bsky.social: “We consistently hear that legislative staffers are experiencing threats, scrutiny from constituents that they try to help, feelings of job and income insecurity, instability, and a lot of times they're burned out due to long hours.”
From @jamieeldridgema.bsky.social: “So much of the work done here (the State House) is done by the staff.”
Thank you to everyone who came to testify at our hearing today! We had an incredible turnout from legislators, current and former staffers, and labor leaders. Here are some of our favorite moments 🧵

Thanks to all of the elected officials who have supported our movement!
BIG NEWS! Today, we amended the @massdems platform to support legislative staff’s right to unionize. Thanks to all the delegates at the State Convention who supported our amendment!

Staffers deserve a voice in our workplace. We deserve a seat at the table. We deserve a union.
Once again, the House enacted a policy that directly affects our workplace, without staff input. This creates real challenges for already overworked staff, who will need to take on additional responsibilities with no adjustment to pay.
Staffers, join us tonight at Democracy Brewing to celebrate 3 years of organizing!
Are you a State House staffer? Join us next Wednesday at Democracy Brewing at 5:15 to celebrate our third year of organizing!
