For the heck of it, I thought I'd chime in with my Top 12 Favorite Best Picture Winners in alphabetical order. Top 12 because it looks more aesthetically pleasing on my Letterboxd profile, and alphabetical because I refuse to rank them. What would make your Top 12? #Oscars
Reactionary hijinks.
there's no denying that calling these "the worst" in any shape or form is based on personal biases and nothing more. (Also remember that your choices for Best Picture would be equally derided.) The Oscars are basically a glorified popularity contest anyway, so what's with all the outrage?π
And while I'd agree that some of these BP winners barely qualify as movies as we perceive them today (THE BROADWAY MELODY is charmingly primitive, and CRASH plays like a live-action college thesis that guilts Academy members into voting for it, lest they be called "racist"),β‘οΈ
What I π€π’π― imagine is someone reacting to SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE by thinking, "THE DARK KNIGHT should've won!" Or, "Ugh, how did SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE beat SAVING PRIVATE RYAN?" Or, "THE ENGLISH PATIENT, are you kidding? All Weinstein movies should be stripped of their titles!"β‘οΈ
You have to wonder, too, if people actually see these as legitimately "bad," or if they equate "worst" with "most undeserving." I can't imagine anyone looking at SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE or THE ENGLISH PATIENTβmovies made with obvious craft and skillβand thinking they suck.β‘οΈ
What's so interesting about these "Worst Oscar winners!" lists is that most of the reactions are based off of a) what should've won in their place, b) the politics at the time that got them the win, and c) purely personal taste, when Oscar is notorious for not having your back.β‘οΈ
Part Two:
For our latest episode of NostalgiaCast, Jonny and I talk TWISTER with The Lady Wan and (hot take?) how the late, great Bill Paxton gets blown off the screen by Helen Hunt and also the occasional tornado. Part One:
Now on YouTube! We were honored to have the lovely The Lady Wan accept our invitation to talk TWISTER for our latest Bucket List episode of NostalgiaCast! She brings her bubbly charm and laser-sharp insight to our convo about F5s, twister sisters, and steak and eggs, here:

ICYMI: Jonny and I were somehow able to coax the lovely The Lady Wan out of semi podcasting retirement to talk TWISTER for our latest episode of NostalgiaCast! Listen as we discuss the movie as a rollercoaster thrill ride, and how so many of today's blockbuster thrill rides pale in comparison.π
MARTY SUPREME is, if nothing else, a reminder that Gwyneth Paltrow is a terrific actress. I'm tempted to add, "when she's invested," since she does what's required of her in the MCU. It's just nice to see her given some room to play.
Now seated for #MartySupreme. Let's see what all the hubbub's about.
NOW! It's time to enter The Suck Zone as Jonny and I tackle TWISTER, starring Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. The lovely The Lady Wan of ScreenRun returns to help us discuss the thunderous action and earth-shaking FX of 1996's blockbuster spectacle, below!π
Now watching for #PodcastPrep. Any fans of this one? I'm a big fan of this one. And it slots in pretty well with a show steeped in nostalgia.

The TWISTER teaser is one of my favorites from the '90s. Threadbare, giving you flashes of a family under threat, with a thundering sound design that only hints at the monster outside, and a great final "money shot" that was the proof of concept for Spielberg's original pitch for the movie.
TOMORROW on NostalgiaCast... somehow we were able to coax Screen Run's marvelous and bubbly The Lady Wan out of podcasting semi-retirement to talk TWISTER with us, and I couldn't be happier. Catch the storm at 10am MST as we discuss the dark side of nature and blockbuster cinema.
Film "fans" will watch LUXO JR. and say, "Look how outdated this looks! The lamps animated today look so much more realistic!"
What they neglect to say is, "Look how the light bends so naturally around that ball!", "How did they make immaculate objects so empathetic and humanistic?", etc etc.

Also, isn't it interesting how Karl's father and Doyle are similarly framed within each shot during their respective "showdowns" with Karl. In case there's any question about how they're meant to be represented in the film.β‘οΈ
