No trade veto power, but he will be a big headache and maybe sit out if it isn’t a team that he feels comfortable with and that will maybe also guarantee his ‘27 pay.

Yeah I interpreted the “creative” part as likely that also.
I guess Pats would draft who we want them to at 31. Hold them for a couple months while agreeing to AJ extension w/his agent in principle.
Then execute the trade june 1
Pats would have to hope no change of heart or injuries by AJ.
I’d rather have two picks. But I’m definitely down for a Garret trade. That would be cool also. I doubt AJ wants to go to Browns. So…unless it was a rare 3 team deal, I don’t think Cleveland trade is possible.
The only imortant AJ Brown update
There are literally only two ways to trade him before June 1:
1) Extend Dallas Goedert so his dead cap does not accelerate.
2) Handshake deal now with a team that isn’t executed until June 1 (extremely rare).
#FlyEaglesFly
It is a good idea but just unusual for a player to take less money in a bonus, and even if he did, we still need to extend Goedert for it to be possible
And neither of those amounts are enough to get AJ done unless Goedert is also extended.
That might be tough. All of his salary is in bonuses and nothing in base pay. So you’d be asking Hurts to take 10 mil less in bonus just to save 2 mil on this years cap since it’s spread over 5 yrs.
20 mil less bonus is 4 mil less on 26
Biggest thing holding back the trade right now is actually the ‘26 cap. If he can’t extend Goedert then his dead cap accelerates to this year, and trading AJ before June 1 becomes literally impossible.
To the folks who think bringing back Adoree for 4-8 mil is enough at the position, he turns 31 in September.
Howie's plan has to be smarter this year. I spent hours scouring practice squads last year and found only 1 guy worth poaching. Too late, Titans poached him.
#FlyEaglesFly
Howie hates spending in the back 7. So after Muku was drafted, I figured Reed might be gone. It is a little ridiculous he wasn’t retained, given the cost.
He made a similarly weird decision last year at CB with Rodgers.
At least it is a good safety draft.
And someone gave him 6 mil?
Gridiron? Is that formerly gridirongab? I wrote for them one season years ago.
@greghartpa.bsky.social and I recorded yesterday as we Boiled the Offseason Ocean on Tampering Eve!!!

Hahah i was good with the book. It worked!!!
Personally I would not pay Phillips and just scratch the edge itch on day 2, and maybe trade for a low cost vet role player in addition.
My guess is only two years will be guaranteed when Howie makes his offer.
He’s an awesome player and don’t want to see him leave. But yes I think him leaving can be ok since we have both Ojomo and JD. If he leaves in trade, I hope they add a run stuffer or two to help in the DT rotation. They had weakness at DT4 that killed them vs the run in ‘25.
We would also have to extend Goedert in that scenario. There is zero chance of trading AJ before June unless we extend Goedert to push out his future cap hit.
Trade AJ now instead of post June1:
Extend Goedert 0.5% chance
Extend DG+trade JC 1-2%
Goedert leaves zero percent
If JC is traded, which sounds crazy and prob is just folks looking for clicks, that would free up a couple more mil to maaaaayyybe squeeze in a pre-june 1 trade of AJ right now. But it would be very tight.
The Pats 1st is likely to be better next year for sure. We have so many team needs right now, I wish we could do it now.
Unfortunately, due to our salary cap, I don’t think getting a 1st round pick for this April’s draft is in the cards and it might be best to wait to see if someone gets desperate.
You may be correct. It might be what happens. The risk in doing that is that if things go south you might no longer be able to get a first round pick and it seems like Howie might have a shot at the first round pick if he does it this off-season instead of waiting.
With young players coming up for contract extensions in a couple years, I get the desire to front load Phillips‘s cap hit.
My guess is he does not front load because there simply is not enough room under the 26 cap to do so. More of the Philips hits may come increasingly in the next 2-3 years.
Yeah, it’s a rat race to see who can say on paper who has the highest annual average salary. And that does matter, but the guarantees matter more.
And that’s why we are at where we are at with AJ. His money after this year is not guaranteed. We’ve reached an impasse.
I was wrong before when I did the math on the feasibility of trading AJ before June 1.
It is mathematically possible ONLY if we extend Goedert. But it makes managing the team in season almost impossible from a cap standpoint.
99% it happens after June 1
They are both very good. I’m may have Greg on for a free agency eve pod later today.
Ooooof dunno bout that. I’ve been told I am a know it all before, but it might have been meant a different way.😀
Same folk who disagreed w/5th year option only to be proven wrong, a year later worry about the money again.
Among DL:
3rd in run stops
4th in solo tackle
6 PDs
1 batted FG, close on others
Takes doubles well
Often eliminates 2 gaps when singled
4.5 sacks despite low 3rd down reps

Instead of counting sheep, this is what I do to sleep at night.
That’s pretty darn close to what my plan would be tbh. Not that I have a crystal ball….more than one way to do it.
I think can get both a solid WR and a cheap edge in this draft.
The hard part for me to solve is CB2
That’s my kind of factory!!!!!
