Oh no, I guess just keep him fed and maybe post online/put up neighborhood flyers for a found cat? You could put a note on him via a paper collar asking the owners to call you to make sure he's okay if he's still staying outside but coming around your place for food.
Aww, poor dude. I really hope that's not the case. The easiest way to find out what's up is to get him checked for a microchip. From what the husband told me, it sounded like he's a stray (or has an irresponsible owner).
Even if you don't end up keeping him, it's really nice that you're helping him out. I'm sure there's a local rescue org or something that would help him get neutered and find a permanent home.
Two cats are not twice as much work, get him a friend!
