At Avebury we have William Stukeley's depictions and accounts of some of the stones that were taken away and broken up by locals in the 18th century. He even names some of those responsible. But its almost impossible to differentiate uncorked standing stones that have been taken for building from

Cutting from The Sphere (May 3 1958) headlined "STONEHENGE RESTORATION Ministry of Works Experts Prepare to Re-erect a Fallen Trilithon at the Prehistoric Monument on Salisbury Plain" with a photo captioned: "PREPARING FOR A BIG LIFT: A 52-ton cracked sandstone column, part of a trilithon which collapsed at Stonehenge in 1797, and which is being re-erected by the Ministry of Works, is lifted by a 60-ton crane. It was the last of the major stones to be moved at Stonehenge before the work of restoration started."
