Seems to me that Israel and the US have mistaken Iran's prior restrained responses to their aggression for weakness. Huge mistake.

It's clear that the US made a big mistake from the fact that they already offered a ceasefire, which Iran rejected. They aren't stopping.

I distinctly remember previous times when the US did that and then threw said factions under the bus. Happened to south Iraqi shiites after the first Gulf war, and happened to the Kurds three times in the last 5 decades, lastly in 2019 in Syria.

As an aside, in the aftermath of the first Gulf war, George H.W. Bush asked the Shiites in the South of Iraq to rise up.

They did, and got completely crushed by Saddam's army with no help whatsoever from the US.

At the same time, the same happened to the Kurds in the North.

In the 1970s, the US and Iran (under the shah) used the Kurds against the Iraqi government. When there was a peace deal to be had favorable to Iran the US abandoned them.

In the 1980's Saddam wiped out 4,000 Kurdish villages and 100,000 Kurds, all while being supported by the US.

I sincerely hope that the Kurds have learned by now that the US will throw them cynically under the bus whenever convenient. The last time that happened was as recent as 2019 (in Syria).
