"Snakes have become true experts at surviving long periods of food scarcity.", says Rui Pinto, PhD at Animal Genetics and Evolution group and first author of the study.
๐ This genetic change may be linked to snakesโ remarkable fasting capacity.
๐งฌ It turns out that in snakes, the genes that encode ghrelin are missing or so mutated that they no longer produce the hormone.
๐ป Scientists found the secret in ghrelin, the โhunger hormoneโ that drives appetite and regulates the metabolism of most vertebrates.
Snakes can survive months without eating.
But how do they manage it? ๐ค
