You're so right, you don't forget the sound! I was in a massive one as a kid and I've been terrified of them since. Luckily, they're all past me, but I'm really worried for my friends and family currently in warning areas.

Hi! I'm Leah. I study sanctions, war and dictators professionally and Fungi personally. I'm a terrible millennial, prefer typewriters to computers, and am an insufferable optimist. I'm glad you're here.

Tornadoes are really scary. Not enjoying this one bit.
I am not over 40, but I just had this conversation last night particularly related to predictability. You are absolutely correct.
If the work actually matters to you, and it isn't just some badge to make you feel better about yourself or give you an unearned sense of moral superiority, you won't have a desire to arrogantly fuss strangers on the Internet and center yourself. Stop using those in need to serve your ego.
I'm a sociologist of fascism, and I work assisting refugees and defectors from authoritarian horror. I also volunteer with the unhoused and coach down syndrome kids. I have hobbies and interests. My leisure time makes me better prepared to serve my community.
I don't normally even notice discourse on this website because it's always Too Online people saying Too Online things, but you should absolutely have leisure time. It makes you a more functional individual. The moral narcissism of coming onto a website and chiding people for such is exhausting.

Such a beautiful skirt you have there! π

I'm having an unbelievable amount of trouble with the senselessness of all of this, and I am on a team that totally expected this very thing. I have absolutely no idea what my job is going to look like this week.
Right. I get that it's my job (I actually worked on Iran briefly before the whole North Korea thing), and I'm uniquely sensitive to these things, but this is just not a situation for humor and cracking jokes.
I just simply can't be flippant about war. I can't do it. I don't find humor in any of it.
She's completely fine from her fall and tomorrow makes a week, but until her check up clears her completely, mommy indeed says no. She's a very playful, active cat, though so she's really bored with "gentle" play.
A close up of an annoyed calico cat.
The look on her face when I told her she couldn't roughhouse with her dad. She's also not allowed to jump into the window. Basically, mommy is a despot.
Turnips are amazing and deeply unappreciated.
My red converse shoes on either side of two large golden colored amanita mushrooms after a storm.
I love that the storm is bringing out so much fungi in so many places. Decently sized too! Those are my ladies size 7.5 for reference. Doesn't the one toward the bottom sort of look like Pac-Man?

My cousin texting me to tell me he honked at me and lived my polka dotted dress, meanwhile I was giving him a mean face because that's my reaction to getting honked at.
The way I mean mugged my family today...lord...
A bunch of golden amanitas (including one off in the distance) in a field with leaves and grass.
A long walk, listening to birds and visiting with some beautiful fungi made for some solid Saturday morning self care.

Ok update: grandpa of a kid in the special needs program he volunteers with; taught him how to play cards and now he's "beating everybody at every game." I told y'all this man just does neat things.
As I've said before, I love that strangers will stop me and tell me how amazing my husband is, but I really wish they'd tell me how they know him because he's involved in so much.
Absolutely, we all need flowers! You totally deserve some. I love this color combo. π

I caught this fun guy on his lunch break. That old root appears to be delicious.

I note that because I had to unfollow a political scientist On Here this morning because he's gotten increasingly hostile to ANY criticism of his preferred, pedestaled politicians, and immediately denounces and attacks anyone that slightly disagrees as amoral.
I think it's really weird, actually, to be fandom like obsessed with a politician. Honestly? I think obsessive fandoms in general are pretty toxic, but I especially don't understand stanning (as the kids say) someone running for office.
Of all of the things that bother me about law enforcement practices, and that's...whew...a whole lot, car chases have got to be up there. What a wasteful, pointless thing that causes a ton of harm and very little if any "good."
...That are not the kind I drink. I brought them outside for them, and they were shocked that I was being nice to them. I'm shocked people aren't. It really made me think about how mean we can be to each other. They're doing hard work. It's 80 degrees outside. Drinks are easy.
A lunch time story...
There are some workers hired by Entergy out trimming trees around the power lines on my street. I have a big field next to my house with a big shady oak tree. They were all sitting underneath it enjoying lunch. Well, I have Gatorades from a youth retreat...
My father in law is OBSESSED with Laufey and recently showed her to me. She's extremely cool!
The sunset behind the tree line with pink and yellow clouds
The sun setting behind the tree line. There are lots of gray clouds high in the sky from the afternoon rain, but the clouds closest to the tree line are pinks and oranges
I am so grateful for this view every day, but especially on difficult days. π©·

The Haitian one on my maternal side was involved with boats and sugar. That's all I know.
No one knows who my father's father is. The guy that signed his birth certificate was involved in organized crime and apparently was an actor at some point. Grandma was a model. Dad was an oops.
I got to know a local TV famous attorney at a charity event briefly, and we followed each other on Instagram. Welp, turns out he posts with the energy of a disturbed divorced dad and shares tons of bizarre AI and Covid conspiracy theory videos. I have to stop being so friendly.
Yep. I can't tell you how many people that find out I'm heavily involved in church are shocked, and then they're even more shocked that my priest is a young progressive woman. The religious left is a thing. It's important that we're loud about it.
