Why is that? Does the language use here affect how we allocate resources (e.g. to drug development vs. prevention/detection) or something?
Here's the cover of my upcoming book, Cyborg Rights (Routledge), that explores how extension technologies like brainβcomputer interfaces challenge mental privacy, mental integrity, and the nature of personhoodβthrough the lens of the Extended Mind Thesis.

What is an "algorithm", and why is this basic notion in CS and math still so difficult to define? Do we use a consistent idea of algorithm in these fields? My paper on these issues and the conceptual dilemmas faced in trying to develop a definition is now out. Link below.
Great episode (as always). BTW, the case for geometry's origin in our embodied nature has wonderfully and lucidly been made by PoincarΓ© (e.g. in his "Science and Hypothesis"). In his apt words "if there were no solid bodies in nature, there would be no geometry".
Dear #mathsky, if you repost this, it will let people see the article for free. Thanks!

Beyond that though, I have been doing this sci comm stuff for a long time, and I have NEVER before known a time when I've had to grapple with so many nonsensical claims from tech leaders. There's just a constant stream, which most of the media gobbles up. I'm frankly really tired of it. 9/9

Needless to say that it also has some tiny amount of consciousness, right?
Yes, everything. Including my pipe right now. (Too bad I have no clue how to use it to compute my share of the restaurant bill).
Now, that's one more reason for me to travel to Crete this summer.
Story about Russia's human rights commissioner (if you can imagine such a thing) talking about Prisoners or war in something they insist is not a war
2 points:
1 If you ever feel your job is completely pointless, consider that the Kremlin employs someone to be a "human rights commissioner"
2 POWs? Prisoners of War. WAR?? YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO ADMIT IT'S A WAR YOU IDIOTS!!!

I realized that there was no story in English that would explain what happened to my institute, so I decided to write up this blog entry, which shows how low-quality AI systems fail to assess research quality: marcinmilkowski.pl/2024/11/20/w...
ChatGPT. But only for language editing and condensing my paragraphs (when I'm facing a word limit). I have not found it very useful for other tasks.
Yes, please do! Your posts, and the "joy of whyβ podcast are so much inspiring, especially for young researchers!
