It's no longer OK for you to sit in the house of Lords because your dad did.
But if your mate put you there?
That's fine.
Neither of these really feel like democracy to me.
Daily Mail Headline: Pupils' drawings could be blasphemous under Islamic law, Labour councils tell schools - while music and dance classes may go against the teachings of Islam
Oh boy! What a headline...
Ask yourself:
"What am I being asked to believe?"
"Who am I being told to blame?"
Take a few seconds to imagine what the Daily Mail (And Telegraph, GB News and Express) WANT you to think is going on.
Let's see what's ACTUALLY happening...π§΅

Can we just skip to the part where we make @monkemma.bsky.social⬠the arbiter of everything?
Because she is so good at this stuff.
Another absolute classic.
Happening tomorrow @praxisprojects.bsky.social and the NRPF Coalition is bringing together organisations for a Mass Lobby event in London to tell MPs loud and clear that we will not sit back quietly while they push through harmful policies against migrants. π

Even granted that the Home Office makes ministers at least 50% more evil, thereβs something unnerving about Mahmoodβs performative cruelty
This is appalling. The Home Office rejected an appeal from the foreign secretary, Yvette Cooper, that would have protected outstanding students in some of the worldβs most dangerous countries from changes to the UKβs immigration system

And to be clear - I mean senior execs. Until thereβs personal jeopardy involved, unscrupulous execs will continue to screw us all over to boost profit and bonuses.
Watching this excellent docu-drama.
Itβs as impactful as Iβd heard.
Itβs time for criminal prosecutions of those responsible for the enormous harm to people and nature.

If you go back 900 years, then a very high percentage of the people who read this post will also be descended from this man's ancestor.
I'm almost certainly descended from him.
Why don't I get a seat in the House of Lords?
Half of UK news articles about Muslims are biased, landmark study finds

The Prime Minister could interveneβ¦
My explanation: Blue Labour's sole aim is to make Labour so repulsive to the left that they will leave the party.
They do not care about anything outside the Labour party. They just want to defeat the left within the party. They do not care if people vote for the party or not.
Can anyone explain to me what the Blue Labour justification for this is? Who out there will vote Labour because Mahmood prevented a Sudanese Chevening Scholar? And to be honest, why wonβt the PM simply overrule her?
Congratulations to @ankahajkova.bsky.social, whose book People without History Are Dust has won the National Jewish Book Award (Holocaust category).
This book magnificently reframes Holocaust history by centering queer desire and intimacy.

Itβs fine for Russia to use drones to freeze out your population β by the way, can you give us your drone defenses? This is the actual US position.
Cost of Living Action logo
At every stage in this crisis the government has been playing catch-up, rather than getting out in front of the problems we face. For too long, cost of living concerns have been treated as transient, rather than the deep-seated and long-term crisis that it is.
Now is the time for proper solutions.
Cutting energy bills by cracking down on profiteering and shifting to ownership for the public benefit. Decent wages and conditions for all with fair pay agreements across the economy. Bringing down housing costs with large-scale social housebuilding and private sector rent controls. Ensuring everyone can afford the essentials by increasing the social security minimum. Generating billions through more and better taxes on wealth, targeting the super rich, fossil fuels and banks.
The threat of rises across the board must be met with action across the board.
It's why we're calling for a transformative package of measures across energy, housing, wages, social security and taxes.
@guardianheather.bsky.social is spot on here. Conflict raises the spectre of price shocks, "if the jump in the cost of gas proves sustained, household energy bills could rise sharply when the next quarterly price cap takes effect in July".
The government must act to prevent bills rising.
Latest poll by Survation finds 43% of the public think US/Israeli actions in Iran are not justifiable and 49% think Britain should remain neutral.

Things look grim in the markets right now, but at least the U.S. economy wasnβt already being propped up by a massive speculative AI bubble that is highly sensitive to rising energy costs.
π― this. Bad idea to launch a war when youβre presiding over a divided country, a dysfunctional government staffed by amateurs, and a hollowed out, bureaucracy at home, and have managed to piss off almost every ally abroad. No amount of US military skill can offset this political incompetence.
It's actually profoundly similar to the way that eugenicist anti vaccine organisations worked to disrupt messaging around COVID (and previously MMR)
Of all of Israel's wars, the Iran 2026 one is likely the most stupid and self destructive (and there is some competition in this field)
Antonio and Caleb GΓ‘mez-CuΓ©llar went from performing with the Mariachi Oro vocalists before Congress to being imprisoned by ICE. I am doing everything in my power to make sure the boys and their family return home safely. #FreeOurChildren
Kind of epic how British tabloids still haven't noticed that their pro-war position to play to an American audience isn't even popular with most Americans
And that (dying in bed of old age) applies, of course, to all Holocaust victims.
He went out for vermouth and sometimes came home late, and tipsy, which made his wife, who had other plans, quite angry. He liked to go on holiday, enjoyed a nice life, avoided conflict, was systematic and reliable. He was not an exceptional man and deserved to die in bed, of old age.β
That is, we donβt even know if he made it to his 58th birthday in February 1944. But in absence of a date, 8 March 1944 is the date of his latest possible death.
I wrote about him for the stolperstein ceremony:
βVilΓ©m was a loving father and husband. He dressed up as St. Nicholas β¦
stumbling stone for VilΓ©m Kraus
Among those murdered on 8 March 1944 was not my great grandfather VilΓ©m Kraus. At least we assume he was not: the SS ordered the September prisoners to write to their people home just before their murder, and we didnβt receive a letter with that date. VilΓ©m was 58 years old and had bad lungs.
