Why do learned dictionary atoms look like oriented Gabor functions? Good to see the menagerie of dictionary parts available for representing images if only we cared. This research was dropped in favor of CNNs finding almost exactly the same results but less efficiently.

It's fashionable to make fun of DJs as frivolous non-artists who just play other people's music. But sometimes the third space that clubs provide is desperately important, and the DJs guided journey through music is both ceremony and life.

Well, it's big room Prog and I love that in itself. Prydz did own the Essential Mix one year, but there's a lot to be said for L.S.G. or Quivver or Bedrock or Spooky for the crown. This is no Xpander.

Eric Prydz is back after an 8-year break. The king of melodic, hypnotic, emotional long form dance music. Every track in this radio show are unreleased and unnamed, the entire tracklisting is all "ID - ID".

Pluralistic: Blue Bonds (04 Oct 2025) – Pluralistic: Daily links from Cory Doctorow

"Blue Bonds" is a practical application of MMT that sidesteps the need for federal spending, and it's testable.

MMT is fascinating, especially when compared to the NeoCon "running a government is like balancing a household budget" narrative. There is even a push to replace high school economics books with MMT.

A tight frame is an over specified biorthogonal basis that acts like an orthonormal one in every attribute except for successive approximation, i.e. you can't add a few more terms to get a better guess.

Needlets are spherically localized, fall off exponentially and really do form a Parseval Tight Frame. It's a mystery why we keep using Spherical Harmonics when those ring something terrible.

Two circuits built from shift-and-add parts. The leftmost only calculates 17 times the input X. The rightmost circuit has two control signals that, for a tiny amount of extra work, can calculate any of -15,-3,5 and 17 times the input X.

Reconfigurable Constant Multipliers are single circuits that can replace a bunch of single constant multipliers. This is continuing the modern "search for optimized answers" flavor of circuit design and I'm on board.

CPUs are getting worse.

We’ve pushed the silicon so hard that silent data corruptions (SDCs) are no longer a theoretical problem.

Mercurial Cores are terrifying because they don’t hard-fail; they produce rare, but *incorrect* computations!

That was several WW reinventions ago, back when the sugar industry was inserting itself into "low fat" everything.

It all worked briefly. Finally I stopped measuring and discovered picking up heavy things and putting them back down again.

"Animated Bokeh" has been on my whiteboard for a long time, and this is the result.

I thought it would just be for cheesy novelty effects, but it also does lightfield manipulation that was cooler than I expected.

We maintain an environment where everybody is expected to be constantly learning new things. If you ever require the time and organizational support to discover and understand new concepts, it will always be available to you.

Successful candidates display a sense of curiosity and adventure, a desire to work on interesting projects, and exceptional musical taste.

Pacific Light & Hologram is a wondrous company doing several impossible things simultaneously under the cover of being a vegan chorizo factory. The benefits are great, the work is fun, and the other employees often shower.

A cover letter is REQUIRED which specifically addresses the content of this ad. Submissions without cover letter, submissions with incompatible qualifications, and random AI submissions will be binned with prejudice.

What an excellent job description. If I didn't already work there I'd want to work there.

You can test new tech ideas using the Seinfeld Test

Would the product eliminate the plot of an episode? (Google maps, cell phones, paypal, battery packs)

Good tech.

Would the product inspire new Seinfeld plots? (NFTs, AI chatbots, crypto currency, blindboxes, metaverse land sales)

Bad tech.

The simplex algorithm is super efficient. 80 years of experience says it runs in linear time. Nobody can explain _why_ it is so fast.

We invented a new algorithm analysis framework to find out.
