It bears repeating: it's war against ordinary people by the hyper-wealthy parasite class.
It's ALWAYS that.
Wars happen, injustice happens, poverty happens, climate breakdown is happening, because rich men want MORE.
They always will. And to get it they would kill all of us without a thought.

Nah, it's just performative sneering. Pointless and indulgent. The box office demonstrates quite clearly when an expensive movie stinksβand actors, directors and producers likely feel pressured to show willing lest public opinion turn on them. It's a political choice made under pressure.

I cannot adequately explain how fucked up the World Cup situation is wihen the president of a host nation *threatens the safety* of one of the participants (Iran).
The USA should be removed as a host nation and if it's not, the games shoud be boycotted and ANYONE WITH A MORAL CENTER should see that.

A far larger power has launched an unprovoked war of choice on a sovereign nation that was not posing any immediate threat, murdering civilians and destroying buildings and infrastructure, displacing people from their homes and causing untold environmental damage. I wouldn't be wanting to help them.

I swear every time I hear an aeroplane outside and look at FlightRadar24, it's a fucking Stratotanker now, or some other ugly grey murder machine. Or at least conspiracy-to-murder machine.
I mean, good for them actually broadcasting ADS-B, at least - but also could they not fuck off out of my sky?

They didn't elect him because they thought he would make a good president. They elected him because they thought he would hurt people they hate.
And they would have elected anyone they thought was promising that. Harris appealed to people's intelligenceβTrump to their petty shortsighted resentment.

I wouldn't think so. I'm sure they'd be perfectly happy to let us rejoin - as long as we meet the required standards and are willing to take our place as an equal partner.
As we continually reminded brexists back then, once we're out, we certainly won't get our highly favourable position back.

the handmaid 's tale is being advertised by hulu originals
Alt: Women, wearing the forcibly imposed Puritan-style uniform of 'handmaids' in the tyrannical, patriarchal 'Republic of Gilead', walk through the streets.
People really need to grasp the scope of the ambition here. The more they take, the more they'll want. Every minority they successfully push out of society will make them feel empowered to target the next.
This story π wasn't fiction. It was an acknowledgement that society does not easily learn.

Keep scratching and you'll reveal the ableist layer, the homophobe layer, the transphone layer, and then the outright fascist.
And the layers to that point aren't terribly thick.
These people are malevolent parasites.

Commander Jett Reno (Tig Notaro) in Starfleet Academy, standing on the bridge of the USS Athena. She's quoted from a (different but similar) scene in the show, sitting in the captain's seat, sending the ship to warp with the words, "Now show me pretty streaks of light."
I don't know whether we'll get any more of this show, or whether political pressure will kill itβbut if we do see more of these characters and this setting I will not be unhappy about it.

The characters have grownβand grown on meβover the course of the show. Some I liked already (eg the Doctor and Reno); some I liked immediately (Ake and Lura), and some maybe took a bit of time to settle. But the finale really let them shine.

Again, there's a place for that, and great stories can come from it (not for nothing is Cyberpunk 2077 a top game for me). But I liked the idea that maybe, perhaps, possibly, if we really worked at it, we might be able to improve as a species, rather than just letting everything go down the drain.

On the whole an excellent series, and a wonderful return to what I've personally always appreciated about Trek: optimism. Call me naive, but I've missed the old Federation with its deeply held humanitarian ideals, as we've seen it progressively become more and more grimdark gritty.

But if you're going to do it, this is how you do it. The best part? This was a people storyβwhat I've always felt Star Trek does best; what it was initially intended to do. I don't mind the occasional pewpewlaser fight or whatever, but it's the people stories that have always drawn me to this show.

Well, I watched the finale of #StarTrek #StarfleetAcademy - and I loved it. Talk about a landing. I have to confess that the previous ep had left me a little unsureβand still, I admit to being a bit tired of galaxy-threatening stakes. I liked that most of the series had been relatively small-scale.

Like that of Wars, the universe of Trek is VAST. There are so many stories to be told in so many times. There are so many ships, so many peopleβand peoples. Any tone and mood you choose is available.
(Is it self-serving to imagine a series set and focused on a Romulan ship? π¬)

I've always held that it's okay to remake, recast, reimagineβit's not like we don't do it all the time with Shakespeare.
Still, I can't help think that when you've done three renditions of the same set of characters more or less in a row, it might be time to take a break.

Article - The Rodney and Otamatea Times, Waitemata & Kaipara Gazette
Dated Wednesday, August 14, 1912:
"Science Notes and News.
COAL CONSUMPTION AFFECTING CLIMATE.
The furnaces of the world are now
burning about 2,000,000,000 tons of
coal a year. When this is burned, uniting with oxygen, it adds about 7,000,000,000 tons of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere yearly. This tends
to make the air a more effective blan-ket for the earth and to raise its
temperature. The effect may be considerable in a few centuries."
Sorry - this one
