BEYOND BRICKS AND MORTAR BUILDING HOMES, COMMUNITIES, AND NEIGHBOURHOODS ANNE POWER Front cover of Anne’s new book title on huge orange rectangle superimposed over 12 storeys of deck access flats
"There's no one silver bullet for sorting the UK's housing crisis, but this book powerfully reminds us that social housing has to be at the heart of any new strategy - with hands-on, community-based approaches the key to lasting success. For everyone involved in this critically important debate, connecting with Anne's Power's frontline experience, deep empathy and unique wisdom is an invaluable gift." Jonathon Porritt, environmentalist and former Chair of the Sustainable Development "Social housing has a key role to play in addressing the current housing crisis. This book demonstrates how housing investment needs to go hand in hand with investment in local people and their communities." Lucy de Groot CBE, Treasury Civil Servant, Chief Executive at Community Service Volunteers and Chair of The Baring Foundation "A powerful history of UK social housing at the exact time when housing challenges are worsening. Anne Power's 'Housing Plus' model, informed by research and residents alike, has clear and practical lessons for the US and other countries. This is a book primed for impact." Bruce Katz, co-author of The New Localism: How Cities Can Thrive in the Age of Populism Social housing continues to decline as existing tenanted homes are sold to their occupiers and run-down council estates are demolished. Demonstrating the value of the 'Housing Plus' approach - investment beyond 'bricks and mortar' - this book outlines the role social landlords can play in tackling community problems. By investing in estate renewal, helping to house the vulnerable, offering a wide range of tenures, and encouraging community housing, this approach builds links between housing design and a wider social value agenda. With the voices of tenants and frontline staff at the forefront, Anne Power demonstrates how policy and practice can shift the bias against social housing in favour of its re-expansion. Anne Power is Emeritus Professor of Social Policy at the London School of Economics. ISBN

Rent control and WWI Rent control in the UK was first prompted by housing shortages during WWl. The Increase of Rent and Mortgage Interest (War Restrictions) Act 1915 introduced rent control whereby rents were restricted to their August 1914 level. The Act was designed to prevent landlords from profiteering during the war years when demand for housing exceeded supply. Though originally intended as a temporary measure, rent controls continued to apply to certain dwellings until January 1989.
The legislation passed all its stages in Commons and Lords in one calendar month in 1915. It remained on the Statute book until 1989!

Ditto ‘thought leader’
Six social rent bungalows with adaptions for disabled people on a patch of tarmac.
Who could object to that?
Well apparently it has been “the centre of the community for generations.”
And the Green Party don’t like it either.

Well worth a look!!!
Liz Truss says UK will fail unless British media outlets are ‘fixed’
Not sure that she is totally well and certainly not well-advised. Increasingly odd pronouncements but I particularly enjoy the ‘save free speech as long as I agree with it’ vibe. Bewildering.
Is that a quail in your cleavage or are you just pleased to see me 🤣🤣🤣
Really haven’t got my head around this place yet. But here’s Essex in the freezing sun yesterday afternoon. Have a good day.
Oh, a life well-lived
How lovely!

Being that much older than you we had a few of the original books, such happy memories of them.
Why is this in my local paper?
We were in a cafe today and all the music was from our time in the sixth form. Was transported back to Marshall Street for half an hour
Cannot deal with the fact that it’s 45 years ago this week since ‘London Calling’.
How can that be?
