December 2025 through February 2026 was the 2nd warmest winter on record for the Contiguous U.S. according to Prism climate data. The widespread record to near record warmth in the west easily outweighed the cool temps in the east. 🔥🔥🔥

It’s been 26 days since the snow/sleet. It remains in some areas shadowed from the sun and in piles, but it has become quite patchy. :)

Our snow/sleet fell 23 days ago. Temperatures rising into the 40s and 50s lately have aided the melt, but work continues.

Many February low pressure records could be set over the next 24 hours in and near ID as well as northwest NE/western SD.

Our neighbor works on cars and likes to rev his upon start up. This afternoon, he revved his car for a half hour. The cats were not amused.

The result was an uncomfortably close car-b-que, which was being put out as I got home.

Oh wow. I’m more impressed then.

It turns out even the shorter POR sites were higher in some other year, such as 2005 or 1984. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’ll check the January pressure records. I believe only eastern IA, southeast MN, and short POR sites of WI stood any chance of setting January records this morning. This is near the border of records set in 2015 and 1927 (for longer POR sites).

For the majority of the timeline between 2016 and 2023, the agencies show relatively stable fluctuations, generally staying within a range of +5% to -5% change per year. However, there is a dramatic and uniform plummet starting in the 2024–25 period. Every agency depicted shows a sharp downward trajectory, with staffing losses ranging from approximately -15% to over -25%. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shows the most significant decline, dropping to roughly -26%, while the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) shows the least severe but still substantial drop at approximately -15%.

This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again.
