On Friday, Auditory - the audio version of Inventory - will include additional material I was not able to use in the essay. It offers a different perspective on Julie Covington’s character. I’m very excited to be able to share both with you. @backlisted.bsky.social bsky.app/profile/iamm...

A new instalment of INVENTORY is available now via the @backlisted.bsky.social Patreon.

This is the second part of my long essay on Julie Covington. Whatever you think you know about her, I guarantee there is way more to discover. She is a remarkable person.

Only Women Bleed by Julie Covington

Only Women Bleed by Julie Covington

Later this week, I’m publishing a long Inventory piece about Julie Covington, the wellspring of which was this remarkable single. It seems fitting to flag it up on International Women’s Day. #IWD2026.

Hello Bluesky! I am looking for anyone who cares about/writes about/thinks about Rebecca West.

I've been on a 10 year mission to get her a blue plaque in London and am finally allowed to re-apply after it was last turned down.

I'd welcome help building a strong application.

Thank you 💙🙏

Badges by The Loft.

Badges by The Loft.

New album from The Loft coming in May, two days before my birthday. Coincidence? It is called Badges, which is a better title than Pet Sounds or Revolver. Thank you @theloftuk.bsky.social. 🙏

This is sensationally good. Thanks, Andy. 48 years old & the instruction at the start to plug your video player into your stereo remains apposite. I'd bookmark it for now then play large & loud at the right moment (which I just found, pedalling furiously on an exercise bike). Will be watching again.

The Cramps are my first band. As in the first band I found on my own. And they've never let me down since. Naming no names. The Smiths.

As a non-writer, I always imagined writing about The Cramps to be as simple as stripping down to your leopard print undies and hurling yourself off the PA stack. But as always Andy brings so much more to the stage. Brilliant writing.

Another great piece from Andy.

Basically live music should just have ended with this gig.

Venture capitalists are responsible for some of this. So are previous owners of WHS for how they ran the business. Changes in reading habits amongst the public too. But IMIO this is especially bad news because it will reduce the presence of books on the high street, books as a fact of everyday life.

Sunday reading x 2 and Sunday listening. The books are extremes. This may be a wider gap between a @backlisted.bsky.social read and another book than my Brad Thor/Anita Brookner combo of a few years ago. The music is from @iammilliam.bsky.social’s most recent Inventory/Auditory.

Lovecraft, The Classic Horror Stories

Lovecraft, The Classic Horror Stories

Reading Lovecraft again for the first time in 20 years. In the intervening period, his reputation has altered significantly - again - and I know more about his work and life than I did then. Plus the tropes of his fiction have become ubiquitous. It's Cthulu's world, we just live in it.
