"Early ‘unexpected bilingualism’ (UB) is highly prevalent among autistic children, even those who are minimally verbal" acamh.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... note: UB is defined as "the use of at least one language not spoken in the child's social environment to name letters and/or numbers"

I think both can co-exist. Having exceptional skills in a specific domain does not mean that there is no associated disability. I think it is definitely worth looking into though, to bring a more positive perspective without negating the challenges.
Good to hear, I am always happy when my research resonates with people's experience! I am always open to hearing more. Thinking about looking into this in adulthood next.
Big thanks to co-authors Mélanie Boisvert and Laurent Mottron for all their work and for believing in this study! Qualitative work is not easy to publish.

Here, we interviewed the families of 138 autistic children and 76 typically developing children to better understand what they like to do with letters and numbers, how it makes them feel, and what they can learn from this interest.
In our previous work, we found that over a third of autistic children are strongly interested in letters and numbers at a young age.

I am happy to share our latest open access publication entitled: What do autistic children who are interested in letters and numbers do with them? A qualitative study. 🔠 🔢
Read it here: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
Interest in letters & numbers in young autistic children (age 2-6 years), qualitative study, free www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.... "Many parents did not know how their child had learnt to read and said that the interest was fully self-directed and the skills self-taught, at least at first"
Just arrived at #INSAR2025. Let me know if you want to connect!
The odds of having a greater interest in letters was 2.78 times higher for autistic children than for non-autistic children of the same age, even though 76% of autistic children were minimally- or non-verbal.
