Thank you! Agreed. Their anatomy is challenging, especially muscles. I struggled in the first wash, but Iβm lucky to have a friend who grew up around horsesβshe gave me great advice and feedback.

My first ever horse painting. He was a challenge, but I loved every second of it. Painting an unfamiliar subject is rewardingβit forces me to truly observe my subject.

Loose watercolor painting of an American robin. Next to the painting of the bird is a watercolor palette with paints and two paintbrushes.
Last painting of 2025.
Iβve heard an American Robin singing in the leaf-bare maple tree behind our house every morning for almost two weeks. I havenβt heard him since Sunday, but his song reminds me of spring and warmer days.

Female common mergansers rest on a rock in the middle of a river.
First trip to Cook Forest State Park back in October, and it didnβt disappoint. Iβve never seen so many common mergansers in one place; I took a tumble down a hill to get this photo, but it was worth it.

A little snippet of a new painting.
Last winter I tracked a group of common mergansers. I was lucky enough to spot a mom and her ducklings in the spring. Just a few weeks ago, I spotted the all-grown-up ducklings from earlier in the year, inspiring me to start this painting.

Todayβs painting is a spotted sandpiper. Saw this guy for the first time down by the crick this summer.
I think I may need to work on a shorebird/waterfowl series soonβ¦what do yaβll think?
