Sunday sketches. One of my favorite winter bird visitors is the white-throated sparrow. I love their little yellow eyebrows.

Yes! I mostly paint birds and as for pet portraits, cats and dogs. I’d love to paint more mammalsβ€”raccoons, squirrels, and maybe some river otters!

And thank you!

Thank you! Agreed. Their anatomy is challenging, especially muscles. I struggled in the first wash, but I’m lucky to have a friend who grew up around horsesβ€”she gave me great advice and feedback.

My first ever horse painting. He was a challenge, but I loved every second of it. Painting an unfamiliar subject is rewardingβ€”it forces me to truly observe my subject.

Last painting of 2025.
I’ve heard an American Robin singing in the leaf-bare maple tree behind our house every morning for almost two weeks. I haven’t heard him since Sunday, but his song reminds me of spring and warmer days.

Working on a little personal project now that I have some free time to explore mixed media. I hope y’all enjoy my bird illustrations.

First trip to Cook Forest State Park back in October, and it didn’t disappoint. I’ve never seen so many common mergansers in one place; I took a tumble down a hill to get this photo, but it was worth it.

A little snippet of a new painting.

Last winter I tracked a group of common mergansers. I was lucky enough to spot a mom and her ducklings in the spring. Just a few weeks ago, I spotted the all-grown-up ducklings from earlier in the year, inspiring me to start this painting.

We had a dry summer, so the crick is low this year…but there’s still wildlife to see!

Today’s painting is a spotted sandpiper. Saw this guy for the first time down by the crick this summer.

I think I may need to work on a shorebird/waterfowl series soon…what do ya’ll think?

He’s a Carolina wrenβ€”one checked out my bird box yesterday, so I’m hoping they’ll linger in my backyard for a while!
