There are so many parts of my job that I love but I feel so beaten down by the system that I am genuinely considering just jumping ship.
I want to do best for myself, for my research, and (perhaps most importantly?) for my students but I feel like I canβt do that without any stability.
Be clear, we are talking about just a few hundred people, many of whom have gained entry to those well known academic soft touches Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial, who could embody soft power for decades to come, all to please a few racist grifters in politics and the media and voters lost anyway.
A beige pottery with two handles and a narrow neck, decorated with intricate dark brown patterns depicting a stylized octopus. The vessel is displayed on a white pedestal in a museum setting.
We all need a timeline cleanse right now, so let's start the day with this lovely jug with an octopus motif, dating ca 1200-1100 BC.
On display at National Museum Copenhagen.
A lovely weekend to all of you!

One of these "news outlets" yesterday also released the trailer for a new doc they've produced that features a prolific residential school denialist pushing around her own GPR unit and digging holes π.
These are not people who have anything but their own self-serving, malicious interests in mind.
One by one, Europeans mentioned in the Epstein files who still hold political office are beginning to resign or are being forced out of office.
Meanwhile, ruled by an administration almost entirely made up of Epstein associates, the US carries on as if nothing really happened.
WRONG. I-205 administrative warrants are not issued by immigration judges. Theyβre signed by ICE officers. And EVEN IF THEY WERE issued by an immigration judge - they are executive branch employees, NOT judicial branch. JUDICIAL warrants are needed to enter a home without consent.
I wrote about my childhood friend Alexi Pretti. Please read it and share it and remember him as a human being. @theverge.com

Whole lot of academics in the quotes read this title about how LLMs are academic misconduct machines and still line up to defend them. Kinda showing where your priorities are.

"Great minds think alike" is my customary response.
when you see another poster get in the same kind of reply first you gotta delete, it's called tipping your cap
Yeah I will agree the punchline was anticlimactic. Still a good lecture overall.
My dad abhors any negative comments about immigrants. Asked him recently why heβs so strong on it: βBecause weβre always happy to take the rich and clever ones. Which means itβs not about disliking immigrants. Itβs about disliking the poor and vulnerable. And thatβs a bad human instinct.β

We have been working so hard to rehabilitate the image of Homo Neanderthalensis, and defeat the nasty brutish short man neanderthal stereotype.
First this study, and THEN David Spades's tweet.
Tough week for evolutionary throwbacks.

Fragmented remains of a bronze sword laid out on a dark surface, its blade hacked into multiple pieces. The broken segments show long, parallel ridges characteristic of the original blade, along with sections of the hilt and guard.
An intentionally destroyed #BronzeAge #sword found in a burial at Blaubeuren-Asch. Bronze Age weapons deposited in burials were often bent or hacked into pieces before placed into the grave, in this way they 'died' with the owner. Dating 9th century BC.

Another SBL/AAR selfie, this time with Markus Vinzent after an awesome panel on the historical Paul.
@mgbilby.bsky.social, he gave me a copy of your book.
Ran into James Tabor at SBL/AAR today.

Interesting fake sarcophagus in the British museum.
How did they learn it was fake? Lots of reasons, not limited to):
1) Heroic nude is Greek -- NOT Etruscan style.
2) Inscription copied from object at Louvre.
3) Lady wearing 19th century undies! π

I have been WAITING for a journalist to write this story.
I specialize in manuscripts produced in England between 1300 and 1500. If this had occurred in the midst of writing my dissertation or first book, it would have exploded my career.
Remember the recent middle-of-the-night apartment building raid where children were dragged outside naked & zip-tied in the street while black & Latino residents were _sorted by race_ and piled into separate vans while their apartments were ransacked & robbed? That raid? So it resulted in 0 arrests.
