Just published an interview with John Foody - one of the founding editors of Warpstone, the venerable #WFRP fanzine!
We discuss the history of the magazine and of #Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay.

For those interested in the academic research of role-playing games, we have just released our latest issue of the International Journal of Role-Playing (17!).

I think I've heard of it but oddly never actually read this before but this 1975 article by Tony Bath on incorporating fantasy into wargaming is a wonderful thing & wonderful snapshot of the time & just goes to show how much D&D benefited from first mover advantage

White Dwarf's first #WH40K cover came in WD93 (September 1987).
White Dwarf's first #WFRP cover was WD82 (October 1986).
To continue a theme, the first White Dwarf covers to feature #Warhammer games...
#WFB 's first cover was WD53 (May 1984), though it was a battle set in Middle-earth. For the first cover to feature WFB proper you had to wait until WD89 (May 1987).
Yes, half a space marine!
First page of the Skirmish on Rynn's World scenario, featuring an illustration of some Space Orks - spikey armour, big guns - by Tony Hough.
#94 Skirmish on Rynn's World, a Warhammer 40000 scenario by Rick Priestley.
It's the classic Space Orks with guns versus techno womble Space Marines.
First page of the On the Road feature for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay.
#85 On the Road, two atmospheric #WFRP encounters by @graemedavis.bsky.social for travellers in the Old World.
(There was an AD&D scenario - The Black Knight - that was also statted for WFRP in issue #83, but I'm not counting that.)
First page of the Thistlewood scenario, featuring a map of the battlefield, and a photo of Joe Dever's battle table; looks awesome.
#45 Thistlewood, a Warhammer Fantasy Battle scenario by Joe Dever.
Opposing forces battle for a magical chalice - on my signal, unleash hell!
After @awesomeliesblog.bsky.social's posts earlier today of the first adverts for #WFB, #WFRP and #WH40K, I know what you're wondering: what were the first White Dwarf features for those three games? Well...
The booklet covers in this advert are just mock-ups (with badly spaced logos), as evidently the layout work had not been completed.
The first advert for #WH40K
The first advert for #WFRP
The very first advert for #Warhammer
In memoriam
Citadel Miniatures b. 28 Dec 1978, d. 6 Mar 2026.
#Warhammer is roughly twice as big as #D&D.
In the year to 1 June 2025, GW made USD 795m of revenue. In the corresponding year to 29 June 2025, WotC made USD 464m ex Magic: The Gathering; this is mostly (but not all) D&D.
Some early (circa 1980) reminiscences of #GamesWorkshop and #WhiteDwarf.

So that's why he sailed west: to become a tax exile.
A new post...
...with an update on 'The WFRP Story'.
#WFRP #Warhammer #Oldhammer
Sure. I'm intrigued.

I find them obvious and bombastic. Sadly, these characteristics seem to be associated increasingly with Tolkien's legendarium as a whole, as the films have become its most accepted presentation.
My typing's no better this weekend: I keep writing about Khrone.... π
Thanks. Sadly, it's not youth that stops me knowing that....
I understand some of the additional material will appear in Cubicle 7's forthcoming Marienburg book (which was apparently triggered by the blog post above).
A lot more were planned:

Sorry if I should know this, but where is this from?
If my typing were to be believed, GW once produced a book called Salves to Darkness, evidently a treatise on poultices and ointments.
It probably sits on the shelf next to Rouge Trader....
