A6 By allowing choice in the spectrum of assessment design. Whether itβs a traffic light or 2 lane approach orβ¦ and these should be overarching with integrity in mind. Moderation & standardisation should be mandatory for reliability.
A3 Open and regular dialogue. Sharing ai tool updates and encouraging sβs to share also. Utter clarity with assessments - or - let sβs choose what they use as long as itβs within guidelines and ensures academic integrity. Require disclosure - in a positive rather than punitive frame. #LTHEchat
A2 I subscribe to the UOSydney 2 lane idea - although even closed exams now challenged by smart glasses π€¦π»ββοΈ. I like that it embraces insecurity as both real and a route for A4L. Validity for me means detailing granular process in design & providing rationale for which bits should/nβt involve ai.
Q2 What does a valid and secure assessment look like in your area of interest right now?
Reply with A2 #LTHEChat and your response
A1 I think that depends on having chunked the assessment process and having decided which bits need to be human, synthetic or hybrid knowledges
Q1 How does GenAI prompt us to re-examine what βvalued forms of knowledgeβ look like in areas you teach or support students in?

A1 Itβs taken us back to basics. Fundamentals - what is knowledge? What is learning? What is education? I like the way it makes us narrow what is /isnβt so meaningful. #LTHEchat

There really is a new geopolitics of higher education with respect to AI.
It maps pretty neatly onto which countries prioritise STEM vs. Social Science/Humanities.
Watch South Korea. It's the country that appears to be sitting right on top of the fault line.
As the analysis starts of the Gorton and Denton result, I wanted to flag some aspects that my experience yesterday suggests are being over or under-played
(Caveats - I went to Longsight, Gorton and Denton town centres and spoke to as many people as I could, but it was mostly during the working day)
βStudy after study shows that students want to develop these critical thinking skills, are not lazy, and large numbers of them would be in favor of banning ChatGPT and similar tools in universitiesβ, says @olivia.science

We hosted a second "Avoiding AI" panel earlier this month. It featured three faculty sharing their strategies for keeping AI (mostly) out of their courses. Here's my recap of the event: cte.virginia.edu/news/more-st...

But seriously, surely this is peak βwhy bother being at uni / collegeβ and it can only get better from here.
β"Information is not knowledge. The only source of knowledge is experience. You need experience to gain wisdom." ~ Albert Einstein
I was mildly incensed at the latest use of 'Mickey Mouse degree' as a derogatory term for any course that's not directly industry-tied and/or actually helps develop critical thinking skills, to the point where I wanted to write something about it.

A6 #LTHEchat I think Iβve sensed mattering most to international students. Maybe for obvious reasons inc dealing with homesickness, unfamiliarity, and seeking a deeper sense of belonging as theyβve made such an effort to be here/there. But also culturally-thereβs recognition of roles-and gratitude.
Interesting question!
#LTHEchat speaking from personal experience as a student in the recent past as well as being staff- I found having to search for and navigate almost every query online borderline soul destroying. It just feels like what it is - a money saver.
How can we create mattering moments in online spaces?

A3 #LTHEchat IME, with webpages. You know, when you need or would like a human conversation but are pointed to a webpage to trawl through policy and links and docs instead.
A2 #LTHEchat I think active learning techniques enhance this because of the thought involved. Asking questions and listening. Suspending dis/belief. And personable things, relationality. Following up when you say you will. Lots of stuff really.
How do our everyday interactions signal to students that they are noticed, valued, and taken seriously, that they matter?

If a sense of belonging is framed as something students need to have to be a successful student, what might change if we instead focused on what we do as student-facing staff to foster belonging?
