I don’t see these two positions (recognizing change in how ppl engage with information in this age & not lowering the standard) as inherently contradictory, but finding a productive balance between accessibility and rigor has been increasingly difficult.

Though I’m also think abt the importance of not lowering academic standards or compromising the rigor of intensive reading and critical engagement. On my first day, I had students telling me - we had profs just gave us the main ideas of the readings so we don’t have to read them. Huh??

I’ve been reading a lot about more accommodating pedagogical approaches, w the idea that accessible teaching benefits all students. This includes diversifying instructional structures and welcome different engagement styles. Being an anthro class, we also talk abt info-overload and fatigue

I currently teach a few intro anthro classes in nyc and I feel like many students struggle to stay focused for extended periods (90 mins) even when they genuinely find the topic engaging? Some students shared that they can’t get thru even 8 pages of social science readings (not even the dense ones)?
