Green Parliamentarians welcome the long-overdue decision to remove the cruel two child benefit cap, and we want to put on record our thanks to all of the campaigns and individuals with lived experience of the cap who have worked tirelessly to push the government to this point. This cap should have been scrapped on day one of this Parliament, and it is shameful that 330,000 children were kept in poverty unnecessarily while action was delayed.1 Ahead of the Autumn Budget, when talking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Chancellor Rachel Reeves said: “I don’t think that it’s right that a child is penalised because they are in a bigger family, through no fault of their own.”2 We wholeheartedly agree with this statement, which is why we are extremely concerned that the Government is refusing to consider scrapping a second harmful policy that restricts social security support for some children: the household benefit cap. Your Department’s own impact assessment for the Universal Credit (Removal of Two Child Limit) Bill says 50,000 families will see no financial gain at all from the removal of the two- child limit because they are subject to the household benefit cap. Another 20,000 families in the first year will see only a partial gain before the cap applies to them as well.3 As a result, over 200,000 children living in deep poverty will continue to be penalised simply because they are part of a larger family. This directly contradicts the principle articulated by the Chancellor and undermines the stated aim of lifting children out of poverty. The Green Party is calling on you to make the right decision now, rather than relying on a future U-turn, and to widen the scope of the Universal Credit (Removal of Two Child Limit) Bill to remove the household benefit cap. Because lifting one cap while keeping another will still leave over 200,000 children in deep poverty.

Child poverty is a political choice — not an inevitability.

Dear Lucy On the eve of the by-election, your Labour party spokesperson has admitted to the Huffington Post that a Labour party leaflet has been delivered through doors with your imprint recommending a vote for Labour by a tactical voting organisation which does not exist. This is deeply troubling, it is actually lying to voters. Did you approve this? Do you feel the Labour Party in government should be held to different standards in terms of honesty to the British public? In your last letter to me you mentioned your ‘very extensive data’ and ‘having spoken to over a third of eligible voters’ which led you to an understanding that the by election ‘was a contest between labour and Reform’. Clearly this latest development only tells voters one thing - you will employ any type of political deception (or in Urdu “Dhoka” ) to win. You will be very aware that all three real tactical voting organisations are recommending a vote for the Greens as the best way to stop Reform. Lying to the voters, as you have been caught doing, raises the real prospect that Reform will be the beneficiaries, something you have said that you don’t want.
