Rising Talent Fellowship | MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology Rising Talent Fellowship In 2024 the LMB launched the first round of a three-year fully funded fellowship for scientists from Black heritage backgrounds. Wh ...

Scientific excellence can be found everywhere. However, we need to encourage it & create spaces for it to blossom.

The Rising Talent Fellowship offers such an opportunity @mrclmb.bsky.social.

The call will be open soon so keep an eye & reach out the LMB labs!

Our latest preprint: Together with the team of Jan LΓΆwe, @danieltamarit.bsky.social and many others we discovered and characterized several Asgard tubulin genes and propose that microtubule architecture and dynamics evolved in Asgard archaea prior to eukaryogenesis

All plasmids will be available soon at @addgene.bsky.social. We hope this tool will be useful for the community to answer some long term open questions on translation initiation and the role of eIF3.
Have fun!

We also successfully expressed and purified the human eIF2 complex, that together with previously described methods open the possibility for a fully recombinant set of human translation initiation factors!

Purification and characterization of recombinant human translation initiation factor eIF3 Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 (eIF3) is an essential factor in protein synthesis. In mammals, it is a ~800 kDa complex composed of 12–13 subunits. Biochemical and mechanistic studies of ...

Very excited to share this method from Ramakrishna lab!

Here we present a method for high yield expression and purification of active and stable human eIF3 (all its 12+1 subunits!), one of the most complex and unknown translation initiation factor.
Happy expressing!!

Large group of people gathered together at the LMB

25 years on from publishing the structure of the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit, alumni, collaborators & friends of Venki Ramakrishnan’s group joined us for a symposium celebrating the legacy of this work.

🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.

Instead of listing my publications, as the year draws to an end, I want to shine the spotlight on the commonplace assumption that productivity must always increase. Good research is disruptive and thinking time is central to high quality scholarship and necessary for disruptive research.
