"Too Bright To See", Kyle Lukoff
It's hard to be yourself before you know who that is.
I just want to shout out a great children's trans story I came across recently titled "Too Bright To See". It really pulls you into the feeling of body dysmorphia and discovering your gender identity, with a spiritual push.

We all know Mr. Tumor-Head, but I am personally a fan of the people in the back which are literally just yellow ovals with eyes.

Problem Child | Eli Cugini
Pixar isnβt just dithering about diversityβit has become visibly scared of children themselves.
very excited for this to be out in the world: i wrote about repressed queerness in Elio, child surveillance in Inside Out 2, the post-Lasseter crisis, and the figure of the child in Pixar for The Baffler

This is one of 2025's best movies. But you won't get to see it compete at the Oscars.
It's called Nobody, and it earned almost $250 million on a $10< million budget. A future is coming for small, risky films β with or without the Oscars. We explore: animationobsessive.substack.com/p/the-film-t...

I think it tested poorly for unrelated story reasons and it was just convenient to cut it in that moment because of, like you said, the political climate.

Studio heads should seriously learn that, if they're going to answer a question that's related to serious real-world topics, they should either be fully straightforward about their views on it, or not say anything because that middleground response that could make everyone happy doesn't exist.

Anyway we should support JuliΓ‘n (Cartoon Saloon) when it comes out!
Based on the beautiful kids book "JuliΓ‘n is a Mermaid" and shaping up to be very openly queer in presentation and has a queer writer on the team (Juliany Taveras)
Let's support those who aren't afraid of helping tell our stories.

Pixar makes good movies. Even a lot of their more overtly flawed entries like Elio, I still enjoy a lot.
But let's not let that blind us from how problematic the studio politics can still be because of their ever corporate, bureaucratic nature, at its worst leading to tone-deafness like this.

Disney is a brand company. I dont think anyone goes to those movies to "feel represented" but to get a specific vibe.
BUT its always great, amazing and potentially profitable for Disney to give a shit about those things. Theyre leaving money on the table for their competitors (YouTube and Sony).

I just wish some angel investor would back some indie studio or even a whole indie platform to help bring in-house American animation back and allow so many of these artists to be paid a living wage again. There's gotta be someone out there...

Cause the industry that we've known clearly isn't coming back, & the high some of the big boys are getting on YouTube is gonna dry up eventually. There needs to be something more secure built off what the likes of Glitch have been able to accomplish. It isn't easy, but it's what will need to be done

I feel like instead of just thoughtlessly telling every struggling artist to go indie, or even shooting such advice down, there really needs to be more of a convo about how indie's current strides can be used to help build a new, sustainable industry. I'm talking platforms, grants, investors, et al.
