Iβm not sure thereβs ever been a time when weβve needed stories (made by humans!) more. Iβve found some amazing books, films, TV shows β and music! β that have helped me work through life, love, and the universe. Iβll be posting more in the next few days.

Everything is bad, but books are good. Get a book. Read the book. Cherish the book. Finish the book. Tell your friends about the book, and leave a review of the book. Hold the book close. Listen to what it tells you. Do as it commands. Place it on the dread altar and let it guide your every choice.

Imagine if our governments (state and federal) put their money where their mouths are to collectively and actively encourage reading, writing, and storytelling for all Australians?
Imagine.
FIN.
Imagine if we had a coordinated government sponsored campaign advocating for books and reading - not just for children, but for adults too?
Imagine if the government had stepped in to save Meanjin Quarterly, our oldest literary journal - and the birth place of some of our most esteemed authors? 6/
Showcasing what it is about our country that's unique and worth preserving, even as it changes and evolves.
Imagine if we had a public holiday to celebrate books and writing instead of a horse race? Or instead of a sporting event - or even as well!

We need our political leaders to empower cultural ambassadors and advocates to demonstrate why stories matter. Specifically, why Australian stories are crucial to our understanding of who we are and where we come from.
4/
... the sustainability of our literary culture has never been more directly under threat - and never from so many different sources at once. The truth is, many people don't and won't care - too often we don't understand what we've lost until it's gone.
3/
I fear Australia's literary culture is dying by neglect. Between the unknown but substantial perils of AI, the rapidly growing dominance of screens demanding our attention, and the increasing prevalence of faster, shorter, and more "content" over traditional forms of storytelling...

The news that Meanjin is doomed and the Hazel Rowley Fellowship is in its last year just adds to the many pressures and fears surrounding Australian writing and our future. A thread.π§΅
Add this to the death of Meanjin, and it's hard to feel optimistic about the future of Australian books and writing.
That aged poorly.
Although the Hawks AFLM lost on Sunday, the W had a win, so I'll be celebrating footy in all its glory with StoryTime at Dymocks Tooronga this Sunday August 31, reading from Little Legends. Booking details below. Would love to see you there!
Thank you, Cameron. I miss us too!
again, this article is careful to say that trump was never accused of anything in regard to epstein...but fails to note that he was *held liable for sexual assault* or that he *bragged about assaulting women.* which seems relevant! why is this not mentioned in any of these articles?!
Just because Trump is a pedophile donβt lose sight of the fact that he tried to overthrow the government.

...But when you press record and start talking not one single word that comes out is what was in your head two minutes ago?
That.
You know when you're in the shower and you come up with the perfect final sentence, so you leap out, dripping wet, but your phone is on 2% and the room is all steamed up, so you fumble around, drop it twice, then go to record this stunning piece of poetry...
Headline says β Elizabeth Warren Says Paramountβs Trump Lawsuit Settlement βCould Be Bribery In Plain Sight,β Plans Bill To Restrict Presidential Library Donationsβ by Ted Johnson on July 2, 2025 at 8:52am.
Paramount gave $16 million for Trumpβs future presidential library and attorneys fees. Paramount also needs approval for its billion-dollar merger.
This could be bribery in plain sight.

"We rely on Australian writers to inform and inspire us, tell our stories to the rest of the world, and help us tuck our children in each night with bedtime reading." 1/2
I cannot emphasize enough how true & real this is.
In almost anywhere on the political spectrum you ID with or major issue, thereβs probably a bot/troll operation to encourage your rage and vitriol.
And how/where that rage gets directed, esp understandable rage, is what they are out to influence.
"Australiaβs writers are indispensable to our day-to-day lives as imaginative beings and engaged citizens. Quite simply, we canβt live without them."
(Esther Anatolitis in The Guardian.)
Let's hope the Government understands this by supporting Writing Australia, so it lives up to the moment. 2/2
