Make your slogans ring in the politicians ears - but here’s the trick: make them the slogans that politician ran on, promising to carry them out. Be relentless. Be unforgettable. Get in their head and stay there. With their own message, one they cannot repudiate without great cost.

No, that’s why politics only begins when the election is done. Popular movements should march then, right away, unmissably. Thats the time to make your cause and message unavoidable. β€œKeep your promise!” the placards should read. And then detail what those promises were. Put a cost on being ignored.

It is a machine for making out-of-touch politicians out of nearly anyone who gets elected, and for keeping them away from anything that might penetrate that bubble. It’s unkillable, self-perpetuating, and it’s always to be found near power.

The one thing they have in common is not just they want you to give up any idea you had of implementing what you pledged when you ran for office, but to make you forget and *distrust* any of the common sense ideas you had when you were a civilian. And distrust anyone who keeps reminding you of it.

That’s when the big money and the lobbyists and consultants take over. The vested interests. The establishment. The peak bodies and pragmatists and power-whisperers who greet the fledgling elected official with a courtier’s practised flattery. The businessman who runs you over with a 20-ton mouth.

I repeat a wish I have expressed before, that people stop acting as though any politician or party is the repository of virtue and good thought, and that the chief objective of politics is to install such candidates and rest comfortably in the knowledge that the main job is done.

Canavan is a former student communist turned econocrat turned KPMG consultant. He’s not a populist; he’s got little interest in listening to ordinary people when he’d much rather listen to himself. And to money. What money has to say will always be of enormous fascination to him.

And on Iran – no, they don’t have a bomb and won’t any time soon. If it were otherwise then you’d hear quite different language from Netanyahu et al, whereas now they’re just trotting out old talking points without any zing of freshness or sense of panic

It’s more a general sense that if the usual restraints on aggressive action start to go out the window, globally, then the heat starts to turn up everywhere all at once. China, N Korea, India/Pakistan, Israel, Russia – if any of them want to seize a moment, or become cornered or feel desperate… boom

it feels like the chance of a nuke being detonated in 2026 has just gone up from 1-3% to somewhere around 25-35%

I’m probably dialling that number down so as not to freak out too much
