Thanks to our support, Kim secured grants, organized a workshop for the Baby Dolls at the BK House, and had them featured on our upcoming album for the Library of Congress! Here are a few photos of the Baby Dolls performing in the beautiful gardens of the BK House in December 2024.
Dr. Kim Vaz-Deville has been working with the Baby Dolls — a century-old Black masking carnival tradition in New Orleans — on relearning traditional songs performed in Louisiana Creole.
Meet our Le Lab laureates.

Rois & Reines (& Jeanne d’Arc).
Kings & Queens (& Joan of Arc). Last night, our cofounder Scott Tilton was crowned King of the Krewe de Jeanne d’Arc. Each year, Twelfth Night (January 6) marks the beginning of Mardi Gras season and the Krewe of Jeanne d’Arc opens the season in style with a sumptuous parade in the Vieux Carré.
We had the honor to conduct research at the Library of Congress for our Musique(s) project. With the support of the American Folklife Center, we went through numerous archives, including amazing recordings conducted by John Lomax in the 1930s. See y’all this spring for the release of Musique(s).
Really interesting to see the mix of LC and English, and how English seems to be used for humorous effects in the song. Also, shout out to Patoutville and Jeanerette. (English translation below)
Bonjour DC! Our team is at the Library of Congress doing research for our project on Louisiana music. Check out this blues song, ‘Un té pas gain de l’air’, recorded in 1934 by John Lomax and sung by Edier Segura in Louisiana Creole (Kouri-vini).
